Sex and gender differences in symptoms of early psychosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Brooke Carter et al.

Summary: First-episode psychosis presents with variable clinical features, and sex and gender differences may contribute to this variability. Previous studies on the symptoms' sex or gender differences have yielded inconclusive results, and a comprehensive summary of early illness course is lacking. This study aimed to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to summarize prior evidence on sex and gender differences in the symptoms of early psychosis. The findings showed that symptoms of early psychosis vary between men and women, with men experiencing more severe negative symptoms, women experiencing more severe depressive symptoms and higher functioning, and women having a lower prevalence of substance use issues.

Patterns of Primary Care Use Prior to a First Diagnosis of Nonaffective Psychotic Disorder in Ontario, Canada: Modeles d'utilisation des soins de premiere ligne avant un premier diagnostic de trouble psychotique non affectif en Ontario, Canada

Nicole Schoer et al.

Summary: Many individuals with early psychosis had increased frequency of primary care contacts in the 6 years preceding their first diagnosis, with a significant rise in contacts 10 months before diagnosis. Three distinct service use trajectories were identified. Supporting family physicians in their role on the pathway to care could lead to earlier intervention and improved social, educational, and professional development for young people with first-episode psychosis.
