Implementation Science Methodologies for Complementary and Integrative Health Research

David Clark et al.

Summary: Published results of efficacy and effectiveness studies on complementary health approaches should lead to widespread uptake of evidence-based practices, but too often, the scientific pathway ends prematurely. The implementation science is crucial in determining the best ways to improve adoption, implementation, and sustainability of complementary health interventions. NCCIH supports the evaluation of specific implementation strategies at multiple ecologic levels as a high priority.

Longitudinal Analysis of Complementary Health Approaches in Adults Aged 25-74 Years from the Midlife in the US Survey Sample

Remle Scott et al.

Summary: The study found substantial increases in the prevalent use of complementary health approaches, but only a small percentage of individuals continued use over time. Factors such as age, spiritual importance, and previous use were significantly associated with new use across all four modalities. Previous use was also a significant factor for continued/discontinued use. Age and education were associated with discontinued use of chiropractic.

Functional genomics and metabolomics advance the ethnobotany of the Samoan traditional medicine matalafi

Seeseei Molimau-Samasoni et al.

Summary: The leaf homogenate of Psychotria insularum is commonly used in Samoan traditional medicine for treating various inflammatory conditions, with rutin and nicotiflorin identified as bioactive components with iron-chelating properties. Chemical genomic analyses in baker's yeast helped elucidate the iron homeostasis mechanism, and bioactivity-guided fractionation led to the discovery of the flavonol glycosides. Further research demonstrated their ability to modulate cytokine responses in immune cells, providing insight into the traditional medicine and advancing ethnobotanical methodology.
