Characterization of Two Novel Predatory Bacteria, Bacteriovorax stolpii HI3 and Myxococcus sp. MH1, Isolated from a Freshwater Pond: Prey Range, and Predatory Dynamics and Efficiency

Daisuke Inoue et al.

Summary: This study isolated and characterized two predatory bacteria from a freshwater pond, Bacteriovorax stolpii HI3 and Myxococcus sp. MH1. The findings showed that these bacteria can prey on a wide range of bacteria, regardless of their phylogeny. The study also revealed that the two strains have slightly different temperature preferences but commonly prefer slightly alkaline pH.

The Functional Significance of Bacterial Predators

Bruce A. Hungate et al.

Summary: This study found that predatory bacteria have higher growth and carbon assimilation rates compared to nonpredatory bacteria, with obligate predators showing the highest rates. This suggests that predator control of lower trophic levels increases with higher productivity, highlighting the importance of predatory bacteria in influencing element flow through microbial food webs.

tRNAscan-SE 2.0: improved detection and functional classification of transfer RNA genes

Patricia P. Chan et al.

Summary: tRNAscan-SE, a tool for predicting transfer RNA genes, has been widely used for over twenty years. Recent updates have greatly improved its ability to identify and classify tRNAs by creating nearly one hundred specialized isotype- and Glade-specific models.
