US federal farm payments and farm size: Quantile estimation on panel data

Summary: This study examines the marginal effect of government payments on farm size of US corn/soy and wheat producers using a quantile estimator with a restricted access panel dataset. While payments are positively associated with farm size, the statistical significance of this association is not systematically related to farm size. The study does not provide empirical evidence to suggest that federal farm dollars cause only large farms to grow bigger or to grow more than small farms.

Heterogeneous farm-size dynamics and impacts of subsidies from agricultural policy: Evidence from France

Summary: This article investigates the impact of financial supports from agricultural policy on farm-size dynamics. A non-stationary mixed-Markov chain modeling approach is used to capture unobserved heterogeneity in farm movements across economic size classes. The results show that French farming consists of 'almost stayers' and 'likely movers', with the impact of subsidies and economic factors depending greatly on the type of farm. These findings highlight the importance of considering unobserved farm heterogeneity in policy design and assessment.

The socioeconomic impacts of the CAP: Systematic literature review

Summary: This paper provides a systematic literature review on the impacts of the EU's common agricultural policy (CAP) on the socioeconomic situation in the EU's rural areas. The main findings suggest that the CAP has no significant impacts on rural development and the rural population, while it has positive but negligible effects on economic output, generational change in farming, and gender equality. The CAP also has a positive effect on employment, but there is limited or inconclusive evidence about its impact on economic diversification, regional cohesion, and civil participation.

This study analyzes the evolution of EU farm types over the past two decades, suggesting new approaches for future measures.
