Changes in land use and ecosystem services values in Pakistan, 1950-2050

Tariq Aziz

Summary: The study finds that the value of ecosystem services in Pakistan increased between 1950 and 2000 due to dam construction and agricultural expansion, but significantly dropped between 2000 and 2015. Future scenarios for 2050, except B2, show a decline in ecosystem service value compared to 2015.

Projecting effects of land use change on human well-being through changes in ecosystem services

Susan H. Yee et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential impacts of different land use scenarios on various components of human well-being through changes in ecosystem services. It highlights the importance of ecosystem services for community well-being, showing that increased rates of land development are associated with declines in ecosystem services and well-being indicators. However, increases in ecosystem services do not necessarily translate into increases in well-being indicators, as changes in social and economic services also play a role.

Application of the Random Forest Classifier to Map Irrigated Areas Using Google Earth Engine

James Magidi et al.

Summary: This study utilized random forest algorithm on Google Earth Engine platform to process and classify irrigated areas in Mpumalanga Province, Africa using NDVI to differentiate between irrigated and rainfed areas. Assessment of irrigated areas in 2019 and 2020, along with the impact of Covid-19 pandemic on agriculture, helped in evaluating changes in irrigated areas in smallholder farming areas.

Impacts of land use change on ecosystem services in the intensive agricultural area of North China based on Multi-scenario analysis

Qian Sun et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impacts of future land use scenarios on ecosystem services in an intensive agricultural area in North China. By combining scenario analysis and quantitative assessment using GeoSoS-FLUS and InVEST models, the study found that different land use scenarios had varying effects on soil and water conservation services, with forest showing the most benefits. The integrated land use change impact index (ILUCII) and the single land use change impact index (SLUCII) were proposed to quantitatively measure these impacts.

Modelling spatial relationships between land cover change and its drivers in the Afro-alpine belt of Mount Guna (Ethiopia)

Adugnaw Birhanu et al.

Summary: In the study area of Mt. Guna, there were dynamic land cover changes between 1957 and 2018, mainly converting into cropland. Population density, slope gradient, and clustered homestead density were found to increase the likelihood of land cover change, while higher elevation, water source density, and precipitation were found to reduce the likelihood of land cover change. However, the influence was stronger in larger spatial scales compared to smaller scales.

Shishay Kiros Weldegebriel et al.

Summary: The study in the Mekelle city region analyzed the land-use dynamics over the past 47 years and found a continuous decrease in ecosystem-service values, indicating more severe ecosystem degradation. It suggests ecological restoration as the best option for policy development in the study area.

Evaluation of the status of land use/land cover change using remote sensing and GIS in Jewha Watershed, Northeastern Ethiopia

Dereje Gebrie Habte et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the land use/land cover status of the Jewha watershed in central Ethiopia, revealing a significant decrease in forest and shrub land, along with an increase in cultivated land over time. The findings emphasize the importance of informed decision-making for better land use management and environmental conservation interventions.
