World Settlement Footprint 3D-A first three-dimensional survey of the global building stock

Summary: Settlements, particularly cities, face key challenges related to global change and sustainable development. However, there is currently no consistent and detailed survey of the distribution and concentration of the building stock worldwide. To address this data gap, an approach was developed to map key characteristics of the world's building stock in unprecedented spatial detail for every settlement. The resulting World Settlement Footprint 3D dataset provides valuable and globally consistent information on the built environment, enabling a wide range of environmental, socioeconomic, and climatological studies.
