The Best Services Trial (BeST?): a cluster randomised controlled trial comparing the clinical and cost-effectiveness of New Orleans Intervention Model with services as usual (SAU) for infants and young children entering care

Karen Crawford et al.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the application of the New Orleans Intervention Model (NIM) in child care, by conducting structured assessments of family relationships and offering trial treatments to improve family functioning, in order to determine whether the child should return home or be adopted. It will help determine the clinical and cost-effectiveness of NIM in the UK and have important implications for the use of mental health assessment and treatment in decision-making about children in the care system.

The expected and the unexpected in recovery and development after abuse and neglect: The role of early foster carer commitment on young children's symptoms of attachment disorders and mental health problems over time

Fiona Turner et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of foster carer commitment on symptoms of Attachment Disorders (AD) and mental health problems in young children post-maltreatment. The results suggest that higher initial commitment is associated with a reduction in AD symptoms 15 months after placement, but the association weakens after 2.5 years. However, higher initial commitment is unexpectedly associated with higher mental health symptom scores in the long term.
