Child Maltreatment and Mortality in Young Adults

Leonie Segal et al.

Summary: This study estimated the impact of child maltreatment on death rates in individuals aged 16 to 33. Results showed that individuals who experienced maltreatment had over twice the death rate compared to those who did not, with those placed in out-of-home care having the highest mortality. The main causes were poisoning, alcohol, and suicide.

Personality pathways to mortality: Interleukin-6 links conscientiousness to mortality risk

Paraic S. O'Suilleabhain et al.

Summary: Higher conscientiousness is associated with lower mortality risk, partially due to lower IL-6 levels. While there is initial evidence that biomarkers mediate the relationship between personality traits and mortality risk, the association is not significant when controlling for sociodemographic variables.

Association of Childhood Adversity With Morbidity and Mortality in US Adults A Systematic Review

Lucinda Rachel Grummitt et al.

Summary: This systematic review shows that childhood adversity is a significant contributor to morbidity and mortality in the US and can be considered a preventable risk factor for mortality. Preventing childhood adversity and intervening on pathways linking these experiences to increased disease risk should be a critical public health priority.

Child maltreatment, early life socioeconomic disadvantage and all-cause mortality in mid-adulthood: findings from a prospective British birth cohort

Nina T. Rogers et al.

Summary: The study found that early-life adversities such as child maltreatment and socioeconomic disadvantage were associated with all-cause mortality in mid-adulthood. Specific types of ELAs, including sexual abuse, socioeconomic disadvantage, physical abuse, and neglect, were independently associated with an increased risk of premature death. Different types of adversities could influence premature mortality via different pathways, highlighting the need for further research.
