Motives to Publish, to Patent and to Standardize: An Explorative Study Based on Individual Engineers' Assessments

Knut Blind et al.

Summary: This paper examines engineers' motivation for scientific publications, patenting, and contribution to standardization using the concepts of 'Gold', 'Ribbon', and 'Puzzle'. The study is based on a survey of engineers employed by two German OEMs in the automotive sector. The findings suggest that engineers prioritize intrinsic satisfaction over financial rewards and career reputation, while financial rewards are generally of lower importance and not relevant to standardization contributions. Comparing these motivations with researchers in public research organizations, the study highlights the role of regulatory framework conditions and intra-organizational structures in driving engineers' intrinsic motivations. Implications for companies and public research organizations' incentives and support schemes are discussed.

Development of 5G-Identifying organizations active in publishing, patenting, and standardization

Magnus Buggenhagen et al.

Summary: Publications, patents, and standard contributions are all important for the development of 5G technology. However, current research mainly focuses on patent data and neglects the importance of publications and standard contributions. Our study finds a strong correlation between the number of publications, patents, and standard contributions for companies offering fair and reasonable licensing conditions. We also observe that patenting and standardization are dominated by a few large companies, while publishing is more globally distributed.

Carbon capture and storage in South Africa: A technological innovation system with a political economy focus

Yu-Chia Ko et al.

Summary: This study investigates South Africa's deployment of the carbon capture and storage project in the context of technological innovation system approach, identifying shortcomings and developing an integrated framework for better understanding. The findings emphasize the importance of incumbents' power and the lack of a legal framework, which may hinder the success of TIS implementation.
