Cognitive reserve and brain maintenance in aging and dementia: An integrative review

Gabriela Alvares Pereira et al.

Summary: This research delves into the differentiation between cognitive reserve and brain maintenance concepts, examining how socio-behavioral proxies such as education, occupational attainment, and leisure activities play a role in cognitive decline and brain pathology. Studies using functional and structural neuroimaging demonstrate the protective effects of education, leisure activities, and occupational activity against cognitive decline and dementia, as well as the existence of brain networks underlying cognitive reserve. Additionally, lifestyle factors like abstaining from smoking, moderate alcohol consumption, and physical activity contribute to brain maintenance and preservation of cognitive function, highlighting the importance of understanding neural mechanisms in aging for cognitive health.

The impact of cognitive impairment on survival and medication adherence among older women with breast cancer

Yasser Alatawi et al.

Summary: This study found that older female patients with cognitive impairments and a breast cancer diagnosis have a heightened risk of cancer-specific and non-cancer mortality. Regardless of cognitive impairments, these patients showed low adherence levels to chronic medication. However, chronic medication adherence did not appear to play a role in the association between cognitive impairments and non-cancer mortality.

Molecular Subtypes, Metastatic Pattern and Patient Age in Breast Cancer: An Analysis of Italian Network of Cancer Registries (AIRTUM) Data

Giovanna Tagliabue et al.

Summary: Breast cancer stage at diagnosis, patient age, and molecular tumor subtype all play a role in disease progression. A study on Italian breast cancer patients found that tumor metastasis to target organs varied among different age groups and molecular subtypes, ultimately impacting survival rates.
