Quality of life and mental health in children and adolescents during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic: results of a two-wave nationwide population-based study

Ulrike Ravens-Sieberer et al.

Summary: The German COPSY study is a longitudinal study that examines the mental health impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on children and adolescents. The study found that during the pandemic, the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of children and adolescents decreased, and there was an increase in emotional problems, peer-related mental health problems, anxiety, depressive symptoms, and psychosomatic complaints. Socially disadvantaged children and children of mentally burdened parents were more at risk of impaired mental health, while female gender and older age were associated with fewer mental health problems. A positive family climate and social support supported the mental health of children and adolescents during the pandemic.

Fakir Al Gharaibeh et al.

Summary: The study revealed that many families exhibited symptoms of mental health issues during the COVID-19 quarantine, such as disrupted sleep patterns, changes in eating habits, excessive digital media use, anxiety, depression, excessive smoking, stomach aches, bedwetting among children, and persistent headaches. The research also highlighted the psychological stress experienced by partners during the lockdown, due to concerns over job security. Family members spent more time together during the lockdown, leading to increased family bonding and communication.

The COVID-19 pandemic Check Adverse effects on the social determinants of health in children and families

Elissa M. Abrams et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated adverse impacts on children, leading to increases in housing and food insecurity, as well as a significant rise in abuse-related injuries. Public policies such as school closures have had disproportionate effects on populations facing adverse social determinants. Ongoing studies are needed to measure the pandemic's impact on those with adverse social determinants, especially children.

Russell Viner et al.

Summary: This study reviews the association of school closures during the COVID-19 pandemic with the mental health, health behaviors, and well-being of children and adolescents. The findings suggest that school closures are associated with adverse mental health symptoms and unhealthy behaviors among children and adolescents. However, it is difficult to determine the direct impact of school closures as they are often implemented as part of broader social lockdown measures.

Physical abuse of young children during the COVID-19 pandemic: Alarming increase in the relative frequency of hospitalizations during the lockdown period

Melanie Loiseau et al.

Summary: The study looked at hospital admissions for physically abused children aged 0-5 in France during the COVID-19 lockdown from March to April 2020, compared to the same period in the previous three years. While the absolute number of abused children did not significantly change, there was a 40% increase in the relative frequency of hospitalizations for physical abuse from 2017 to 2020. This suggests a concerning rise in violence against young children during the lockdown period.
