Do Children With Developmental Language Disorder Activate Scene Knowledge to Guide Visual Attention? Effect of Object-Scene Inconsistencies on Gaze Allocation

Andrea Helo et al.

Summary: The study found that children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) show less attraction to semantic and syntactic inconsistencies in visual scenes compared to age-matched children with Typical Language Development (TLD). In addition, saliency only modulates the syntactic effect in the TLD group. These findings suggest a link between scene knowledge and language development, as children with DLD do not efficiently activate scene knowledge to guide visual attention, particularly at the syntactic level.

Shared and unique brain network features predict cognitive, personality, and mental health scores in the ABCD study

Jianzhong Chen et al.

Summary: How individual differences in brain network organization track behavioral variability is a fundamental question in systems neuroscience. The authors use data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study to show how individual variation in cognition, personality and mental health can be predicted by shared and unique brain network features.

Brain Mechanisms Supporting Flexible Cognition and Behavior in Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorder

Lucina Q. Uddin

Summary: This review examines the brain mechanisms underlying the development of flexible cognition during adolescence and its impact on individuals with ASD, highlighting atypical brain network activation in ASD individuals during tasks requiring cognitive flexibility. Future research directions include improving measurement of cognitive flexibility, addressing heterogeneity in executive function ability in ASD, exploring the influence of pubertal hormones on brain development, and investigating the potential connection between bilingualism and preserved cognitive flexibility in ASD individuals.

Impact of language disorders on children's everyday lives from 4 to 13 years: Commentary on Le, Mensah, Eadie, McKean, Schiberras, Bavin, Reilly and Gold (2020)

Rena Lyons

Summary: This paper examines the trajectories of health-related quality of life in children with language disorders aged 4-13 years, finding that higher language scores are associated with better HRQoL in school and social domains. It also reveals different characteristics of children in various HRQoL trajectory groups, aiding in understanding the impact of language disorders on children's lives.
