Cluttering in the Speech of Young Men With Fragile X Syndrome

Katherine Bangert et al.

Summary: This study examines the rates of cluttering in male young adults with fragile X syndrome (FXS), indicating that half of the participants exhibited cluttering. The most salient feature distinguishing individuals who cluttered was phrase repetitions. Cluttering was found to be associated with higher nonverbal cognition, elevated ADHD symptoms, and reduced anxiety symptoms.

Cooperative Parent-Mediated Therapy in Children with Fragile X Syndrome and Williams Beuren Syndrome: A Pilot RCT Study of a Transdiagnostic Intervention-Preliminary Data

Paolo Alfieri et al.

Summary: Children with fragile X syndrome and William Beuren syndrome have shared socio-communicative deficits. However, there are few studies exploring the feasibility and effectiveness of therapy for these genetic conditions. In this pilot RCT, preliminary data showed that cooperative parent-mediated therapy had a significant improvement on socio-communicative deficits.

Pragmatic Profiles of Adults with Fragile X Syndrome and Williams Syndrome

Eliseo Diez-Itza et al.

Summary: The present study investigated the syndrome-specific pragmatic profiles of adults with Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) and Williams Syndrome (WS) based on the assessment of conversational maxims observance. The study found that individuals with FXS exhibited non-contingent language and impulsive conversational responses, while individuals with WS showed tangential utterances and overly literal interpretation in conversation. These pragmatic profiles highlight the importance of assessing and intervening in the social communication abilities of individuals with FXS and WS.

Analysis of a Repetitive Language Coding System: Comparisons between Fragile X Syndrome, Autism, and Down Syndrome

Anne Hoffmann et al.

Summary: This study examined three types of linguistic self-repetition in three neurodevelopmental disabilities - fragile X syndrome, autism spectrum disorder, and Down syndrome - using an expressive language sampling protocol. Findings showed significant differences in repetitive language measures between the groups with fragile X syndrome and autism spectrum disorder, as well as between the group with Down syndrome and either autism spectrum disorder or fragile X syndrome. Cognitive ability was significantly related to phrase repetition in the autism spectrum disorder group. In conclusion, this study supports the use of expressive language sampling as a tool to characterize pragmatic language and provides insights into the relationships between repetitive language and other phenotypic characteristics.

Summary: This research analyzed the relationship between linguistic functions and neuropsychological functions in girls with Fragile X syndrome. Different aspects of language were found to influence executive functions, social perception, adaptive behavior, and quantitative reasoning in girls with FXS. Future studies should explore the influence of other cognitive variables on the behavior of girls with FXS.
