Recent trends of mesoporous silica-based nanoplatforms for nanodynamic therapies

Summary: Nanodynamic therapies using nanosensitizers triggered by various activators or reactions in tumor microenvironment have emerged as attractive strategies for treating deep-seated tumors. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) and MSNs-based hybrid nanoparticles are promising candidates for nanodynamic therapies due to their large surface area, high pore volume, biosafety, and easy surface modification. This review summarizes the antitumor mechanisms and latest progress in the construction, modification, and application of MSNs-based nanodynamic therapies, including photodynamic therapy, chemodynamic therapy, sonodynamic therapy, thermodynamic therapy, radiodynamic therapy, and electrodynamic therapy. The challenges and prospects for clinical applications of MSNs-based ROS-activated cancer treatments are also discussed.
