A review on the durability performance of alkali-activated binders subjected to chloride-bearing environment

Babatunde Abiodun Salami et al.

Summary: Globally, industries have not made sustained efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Research on building materials has focused on the synthesis of alternative cement-free binders to reduce greenhouse gases. Alkali-activated binders have been extensively studied and proven to have superior or equivalent performance to conventional concrete. However, there is still a lack of research on the resistance of these binders to chloride in the environment.

Effect of ferrosilicon and silica fume on mechanical, durability, and microstructure characteristics of ultra high-performance concrete

Mohamed Amin et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new material, ferrosilicon slag, as a partial substitute for cement in ultra high-performance concrete (UHPC), with microparticles having a surface area of 12,850 (cm2/gm). Results show that increasing the replacement rates of ferrosilicon slag and silica fume by up to 25% can significantly enhance the compressive strength and transport properties of UHPC. This material also has an impact on the fresh concrete properties and mechanical properties of UHPC.

Strain Hardening of Polypropylene Microfiber Reinforced Composite Based on Alkali-Activated Slag Matrix

Olga M. Smirnova et al.

Summary: This comparative study examines the fracture features, strength, and deformation properties of pseudo strain-hardening composites based on alkali-activated slag and Portland cement matrices with polypropylene microfiber. The correlations between composition and stress-strain diagrams were determined, along with additional determination of acoustic emission parameters. The study found that non-destructive testing using acoustic emission events can monitor structures based on strain-hardening composites.

Effects of nanomaterials on mechanical properties, durability characteristics and microstructural features of alkali-activated binders: A comprehensive review

Faris Matalkah et al.

Summary: The incorporation of nanomaterials in the concrete industry to enhance its mechanical and durability properties has gained attention. Alkali-activated binders are considered as alternatives to conventional Portland cement-binders due to their superior mechanical properties and environmental advantages. This review provides a summary of research on the incorporation of selected nanomaterials in alkali-activated binders from 2010 to 2021. The inclusion of nanomaterials such as nano-silica, nano-alumina, nano-titanium dioxide, and carbon nanotubes promotes geopolymerization reactions, densifies the microstructure, and enhances mechanical properties. Additionally, the addition of these nanomaterials improves the durability of geopolymers against severe chemical conditions. The potential health issues and cost-efficiency related to the use of nanomaterials are also discussed.

Using artificial neural networks for predicting mechanical and radiation shielding properties of different nano-concretes exposed to elevated temperature

Alaa A. El-Sayed et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of adding different Nano additives on the mechanical and radiation shielding properties of concrete after exposure to elevated temperatures. The hybrid mix of Nano alumina and Carbon Nanotubes showed the best enhancement in both properties. An Artificial Neural Network (ANN) was developed to predict the values of mechanical strength and radiation attenuation coefficient for different concrete mixtures. The ANN showed a high agreement with experimental results and had better predictive capability than regression analysis.

Crack self-healing in alkali-activated slag composites incorporating immobilized bacteria

Lei Zhang et al.

Summary: Decarbonizing concrete manufacturing is important due to the significant contribution of cement production to global CO2 emissions. Alkali-activated materials (AAMs) have shown potential as alternatives to ordinary portland cement (OPC) concrete. However, AAMs are prone to cracking, limiting their wider acceptance. This study investigates the self-healing efficiency of AAMs using bacteria immobilized in expanded glass granules made from recycled glass. The results demonstrate improved crack healing and reduced water absorption in the biobased samples.

Summary: This research investigates the effect of different thermal treatment methods on the behavior of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) using nanorice husk ash (NRHA). Experimental tests and microstructural analysis show that the addition of NRHA can significantly improve the mechanical properties of UHPC. An artificial neural network (ANN) model is also built to predict UHPC properties, which demonstrates a reliable correlation between input and output variables.
