Effects of gravel content and shape on shear behaviour of soil-rock mixture: Experiment and DEM modelling

Yongsheng Yao et al.

Summary: The study found that gravel shape has a greater impact on the shear strength of soil-rock mixture (SRM) than gravel content, and the discrete element method can accurately predict the mechanical properties and deformation behavior of the material. As gravel content increases, the contribution of contact force within gravel particles increases, and the interlocking work has a nonlinear positive correlation with the increase of sphericity.

Macro-meso fatigue failure of bimrocks with various block content subjected to multistage fatigue triaxial loads

Yu Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fatigue responses of bimrock with various rock block percentage under multi-level cyclic loads. The results show that the damage-cracking and volumetric dilatancy of the bimrock are strongly influenced by the block content. A two-stage damage evolution model is proposed to describe the damage propagation, which fits the testing data well. Visualizations of mesoscopic interface damage-cracking and volumetric dilatancy are obtained from CT images. The study provides insights into the long-term stability of bimrock slopes under complex disturbed stress.

Evaluation on Deformation Behavior of Granular Base Material during Repeated Load Triaxial Testing by Discrete-Element Method

Jue Li et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the behavior of granular base material under repeated load triaxial testing using the discrete-element method. The results showed that the resilient modulus of the GBM increased with the growth of stress, and the microstructure remained relatively stable during cyclic loading.

Stress-dependent water retention of granite residual soil and its implications for ground settlement

Yongsheng Yao et al.

Summary: The experimental results showed that the applied vertical stress decreased the retained water content by up to 13% when the suction was less than 200 kPa. The numerical results indicated that considering the influence of stress on water retention could predict a higher ground heave and a larger ground settlement, compared with the conventional method without stress effects. This study implied that the method employed in the present study was more scientific and conservative for assessing ground settlement in pavement engineering.

Three-dimensional reconstruction of realistic stone-based materials with controllable stone inclusion geometries

Xiang Wang et al.

Summary: The study aims to generate three-dimensional models of stone-based materials with controllable stone-inclusion geometries using the SHT method and IMC algorithm. An overlapping detection algorithm is proposed to quantitatively control the geometrical features of the stones, paving the way for stochastic modeling in construction and manufacture processes.

Effect of compaction delay on the strength and consolidation properties of cement-stabilized subgrade soil

Zeynab Nazari et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the effect of compaction delay on the mechanical and consolidation characteristics of cement-stabilized subgrade soil, finding that delayed samples exhibit reduced maximum dry density and unconfined compressive strength compared to non-delayed ones, indicating a destructive effect on the mechanical properties of the soil-cement samples in the long run. Additionally, higher compaction delay yields mixtures with higher compression index and void ratio, and regression models show that variations in cement content notably influence the maximum dry density and unconfined compressive strength.

Shear strength and life cycle assessment of volcanic ash-based geopolymer and cement stabilized soil: A comparative study

Pooria Ghadir et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the feasibility of using volcanic ash-based geopolymer as an alternative soil stabilizer to cement by comparing their shear strength behavior and life cycle assessment. The results showed that increasing binder content changes the structure of clayey soil through aggregation, thus improving the shear resistance.

Utilization of Zeolite to Improve the Behavior of Cement-Stabilized Soil

MohammadReza ShahriarKian et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of cement and zeolite on the UCS of low-plasticity silty sand-clayey sand. The results showed that a combination of cement and zeolite can enhance the mechanical behavior of the soils, with specimens containing both demonstrating higher UCS values. Additionally, specimens with 6% cement and 9% zeolite showed the best freeze-thaw durability among the samples tested.
