High-strength metakaolin-based hollow-core microspheres as an internal curing agent for mitigation of autogenous shrinkage of well cement

Huajie Liu et al.

Summary: The high-strength metakaolin-based hollow-core microspheres (HMHM) can be used to reduce autogenous shrinkage in cement slurry without negatively affecting other properties. HMHM has stable liquid absorption ability and enhances the performance of cement slurry, reducing shear value and increasing compressive strength.

Evaluation Method and Mitigation Strategies for Shrinkage Cracking of Modern Concrete

Jiaping Liu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a multi-field coupling model with hydration degree as the basic state parameter to estimate concrete shrinkage cracking risk, and introduces three new key technologies to reduce thermal, autogenous, and drying shrinkages of concrete. A design process based on the theoretical model and key technologies is proposed to control cracking risk index below the threshold value, with two engineering application examples demonstrating the effectiveness of the methods and technologies.

A novel vermiculite/ vegetable polyurethane resin-composite for thermal insulation eco-brick production

Lucas Gomes Rabello et al.

Summary: Affordable houses with thermal insulation materials using raw and expanded vermiculite combined with vegetable polyurethane resin were effectively tested in reducing temperature and improving compressive strength in high temperature regions. The study found that incorporating vermiculite into the materials enhanced thermal stability and flame retardancy, with 70% raw vermiculite bricks showing promising results.

Mechanical and restrained shrinkage behaviors of cement mortar incorporating waste tire rubber particles and expansive agent

Jianwen Shao et al.

Summary: The study found that the combination of rubber particles and United Expansive Agent (UEA) has significantly improved the reduction of cracking risks in concrete. The incorporation of smaller-sized rubber particles reduces strength loss and contributes more to shrinkage reduction. Additionally, cracks in specimens are mostly restricted to the expected areas.

Restraining effect of aggregates on autogenous shrinkage in cement mortar and concrete

Tianshi Lu et al.

Summary: Shrinkage-induced cracking can impair the durability of concrete structures, and various models have been proposed to predict autogenous shrinkage, with the consideration of the restraining effect of aggregates. However, cement paste is not ideally elastic and creep also plays an important role in autogenous shrinkage. The extended Pickett model, which takes creep into consideration, shows promising results in predicting the autogenous shrinkage of mortar and concrete.
