Engineering of H-Bonding Interactions in PVA/g-C3N4 Hybrids for Enhanced Structural, Thermal, and Mechanical Properties: Toward Water-Responsive Shape Memory Nanocomposites

Mohammed Majdoub et al.

Summary: New water-triggered shape memory nanocomposites are developed by incorporating graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (g-C3N4) in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films. The study shows that the water-triggered shape memory effect of the PVA/g-C3N4 nanocomposites is greatly enhanced by establishing strong H-bonding interactions between g-C3N4 and PVA. The designed nanocomposites exhibit improved physicochemical properties and a suggested shape memory mechanism. These findings have significance in developing nanocomposites with enhanced properties and understanding the shape recovery mechanism in water-triggered shape memory polymers (gSMP) derived from g-C3N4.

Near-infrared light-responsive shape memory hydrogels with remolding and excellent mechanical performance

Yang Zou et al.

Summary: In this study, hydrogel materials with near-infrared light-triggered shape memory were prepared by simply blending polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with a tannic acid (TA) and ferric ion (Fe3+) complex (TA-Fe3+). The introduction of TA-Fe3+ endowed the hydrogel with a good photothermal effect, enabling shape recovery in a short time under near-infrared light irradiation. The hydrogels also demonstrated excellent tensile strength and remolding properties due to the hydrogen bonding between PVA, TA-Fe3+, and PVA chains. The PVA/TA-Fe3+ hydrogels are expected to have promising applications in biomedicine and intelligent engineering.

Triple and Two-Way Reversible Shape Memory Polymer Networks with Body Temperature and Water Responsiveness

Ruixue Liang et al.

Summary: Through thiol-ene chemistry, shape memory polymers (SMPs) based on hydrophobic polytetrahydrofuran (PTHF) and hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) oligomers were successfully fabricated, showing a body temperature-triggered two-way shape memory effect and a body temperature- and water-triggered one-way triple shape memory effect. These features make the polymers promising for biomedical applications, as demonstrated by their application as a new type of esophageal stent with adjustable and self-expandable properties, as well as the ability to release drugs.

Dual Adaptation of a Flexible Shape Memory Polymer Adhesive

ChangHee Son et al.

Summary: The shape memory polymer (SMP) adhesive shows strong adhesion to various surfaces and the ability to adapt to different shapes and flexures, allowing for potential applications in common fabrics. The dual adaptation of an SMP adhesive, with a thin SMP layer and backing fabric, is proposed to optimize both shape and flexure adaptations for improved performance. Research in this field involves theoretical rationale, computational studies, and experimental demonstrations of the SMP adhesive's capabilities, particularly in dry and underwater conditions.

DLP 4D-Printing of Remotely, Modularly, and Selectively Controllable Shape Memory Polymer Nanocomposites Embedding Carbon Nanotubes

Alejandro Cortes et al.

Summary: The study investigated novel electro-activated shape memory polymer composites (SMPCs) for digital light processing 3D printing, showing how the composition of the photocurable system and the incorporation of CNTs impact the printability and electrical conductivity. By remotely heating the nanocomposite using the Joule effect, a significant electrically-triggered responsiveness was confirmed, enabling a high shape fixity and shape recovery ratio. Additionally, the research demonstrated the feasibility of activating selective shape recovery through electro-activation for potentially creating remotely controllable smart devices in 4D printing.
