Additive manufacturing of high-performance engineering polymers: present and future

Cody W. Weyhrich et al.

Summary: High-performance engineering polymers continually push the boundaries in various research areas, such as electronics, transportation, energy, defense, and aerospace. These polymers have gained significant attention due to their exceptional thermomechanical properties and stability under extreme conditions. However, their inherent structure-property relationships also result in high viscosity melts and high melting temperatures, posing challenges in processing. Researchers have turned to advanced processing methods like additive manufacturing to overcome these challenges.

Vat Photopolymerization of Reinforced Styrene-Butadiene Elastomers: A Degradable Scaffold Approach

Christopher Kasprzak et al.

Summary: Vat photopolymerization (VP) is a high-throughput additive manufacturing modality that offers exceptional feature resolution and surface finish. Researchers have developed a VP-processable photosensitive latex resin that has decoupled viscosity from molecular weight. By introducing a reactive extraction cleaves and a cross-linker, the final printed part's material properties can be enhanced.

Effect of the Cross-Linking Density on the Swelling and Rheological Behavior of Ester-Bridged β-Cyclodextrin Nanosponges

Gjylije Hoti et al.

Summary: Nine ester-bridged NSs based on beta-cyclodextrin with different cross-linking densities were synthesized and characterized, showing a dependency on cross-linker content for swelling and rheological properties. This study provides insights into the correlation between cross-linking density and properties of PMDA beta CD-NSs.

Stereochemistry-Controlled Mechanical Properties and Degradation in 3D-Printable Photosets

Anissa L. Khalfa et al.

Summary: Stereochemistry is a powerful tool to modify the mechanical properties and degradation rates of photocurable materials by controlling the stereochemistry of pre-resin oligomers. The synthesis of stereopure pre-polymers and retention of stereochemistry during UV-triggered crosslinking enable the formulation of materials with different mechanical properties. This approach allows for the creation of high-resolution, three-dimensional printed scaffolds with varying stiffness, toughness, and degradability from the same components.
