Sleep Self-Report and Actigraphy Measures in Healthy Midlife Women: Validity of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index

Rochelle S. Zak et al.

Summary: In a validation study of the PSQI in premenopausal women, the PSQI was found to be valid in assessing sleep quality and was correlated with certain sleep measures and depressive symptoms. However, the single-factor model of the PSQI showed higher validity compared to two-factor or three-factor models in this population, suggesting its potential as a reliable tool for evaluating sleep quality in midlife women.

Midlife Factors Related to Psychological Well-Being at an Older Age: Study of Women's Health Across the Nation

Nancy E. Avis et al.

Summary: This study found that personal and social resources, as well as modifiable behaviors in midlife, are associated with psychological well-being in older women, including factors such as reducing financial strain, positive attitudes, better physical functioning, healthy behaviors like physical activity and good sleep hygiene. Psychological resilience in later life can moderate the impact of sleep problems on psychological well-being.

Multidimensional sleep health domains in older men and women: an actigraphy factor analysis

Meredith L. Wallace et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the factor structure of actigraphy-derived sleep measures in older adults and identified five factors (Timing, Efficiency, Duration, Sleepiness/Wakefulness, and Regularity) in both sexes. Confirmatory factor analyses confirmed the one-factor structure for each factor as well as the five-factor structure. The findings provide insights for selecting sleep health domains, representative measures, and potential targets for behavioral interventions.

Differences in sleep timing and related effects between African Americans and non-Hispanic Whites

Daniel Combs et al.

Summary: Previous studies have found that African Americans are more likely to report delayed sleep timing compared to Whites, but there is no difference in morning chronotype between the two groups. Delayed sleep phase is associated with depression risk, particularly in White participants.

Irregular sleep-wake patterns in older adults with current or remitted depression

Jonathon Pye et al.

Summary: In older adults with current or remitted major depression, lower Sleep Regularity Index and relative amplitude were found in the current depression group, along with higher activity during sleeping and post-midnight hours. The remitted depression group displayed lower daytime activity, reduced average activity, and lower amplitude compared to controls, with all groups showing significant differences in self-reported sleep quality and depression severity.

Sleep duration and timing are nonlinearly associated with depressive symptoms among older adults

Chien-Yu Lin et al.

Summary: The study found nonlinear associations between sleep duration, midpoint sleep time, and depressive symptoms in the older adult population. Sleep duration shorter than 4 hours was associated with higher levels of depressive symptoms, while midpoint sleep time after 01:00 was positively correlated with depressive symptom scores.

Longitudinal Association Between Depressive Symptoms and Multidimensional Sleep Health: The SWAN Sleep Study

Marissa A. Bowman et al.

Summary: This study found that higher depressive symptoms in midlife women were longitudinally associated with poorer multidimensional sleep health, particularly lower alertness and satisfaction with sleep. Further exploration of the bidirectional relationship between these common symptoms is needed in prospective longitudinal studies.
