The influence of laser characteristics on internal flow behaviour in laser melting of metallic substrates

Amin Ebrahimi et al.

Summary: The absorptivity of a material is a major uncertainty in numerical simulations of laser welding and additive manufacturing. To improve the prediction capability, an enhanced absorption model is utilized in this study, and the results are compared with experimental data. The study reveals the crucial effect of absorptivity on the physics of internal flow in laser material processing.

Computational framework for the simulation of multi material laser powder bed fusion

Chao Tang et al.

Summary: With the capability to build components with freeform geometries, laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) is considered as one of the most promising techniques for industrial applications. Compared to conventional manufacturing technologies, an additional advantage of L-PBF process is the capability to fabricate parts with multiple materials, such as in-situ alloying and functionally graded alloys. In this study, a computational model was developed to simulate the L-PBF of multiple materials, utilizing volume of fluid (VOF) methods and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The model successfully incorporated various physics of the L-PBF process and demonstrated the simulation of conduction mode or keyhole mode laser melting of miscible materials. Overall, the computational model provides valuable insights into the L-PBF of multiple materials.

A fundamental analysis of factors affecting chemical homogeneity in the laser powder bed fusion process

T. F. Flint et al.

Summary: This work applies a novel mathematical framework to describe the fusion and vapourisation state transitions in multi-component systems in the laser powder bed fusion process. The study investigates the role of vapourisation and condensation of the multi-component metallic substrate to understand the defect formation and chemical homogenisation mechanisms. The findings show that entrained vapour bubbles in chemically dissimilar flows promote greater homogenisation during condensation and collapse, and that preferential element evaporation is a non-linear function of power density.

Employing a new micro-spray model and (MWCNTs - SWCNTs) - H2O nanofluid on Si-IGBT power module for energy storage: A numerical simulation

M. Gholinia et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of using a cooling fluid and micro-sprays to reduce the heat peak of the electrical system. Increasing the volume fraction of nanoparticles can elevate the thermal diffusivity of the fluid and reduce the temperature peak. Using micro spray can create turbulent fluid behavior, leading to hydrodynamic effects prevailing over thermal effects and reducing module temperature.

Numerical investigation on fluid transport phenomena in electron beam welding of aluminum alloy: Effect of the focus position and incident beam angle on the molten pool behavior

Ziyou Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, a three-dimensional model was established to investigate the effects of focus position and incident beam angle on the molten pool behavior in electron beam welding of aluminum alloy. The results showed that different focus positions led to different shapes of weld seams, and the phenomena of inclined keyhole and molten pool were observed. Experimental results confirmed the accuracy of the numerical models used in the study.

T. F. Flint et al.

Summary: This study presents a new formulation of the time-dependent magnetic induction equation coupled with conservation laws for multi-phase fluid flow, energy transport, and chemical species transport. The proposed novel projection method ensures divergence-free magnetic field. Validation is done by replicating Hartmann flow profile and predicting Argon bubble trajectory, as well as simulating an electrical arc welding process. The framework addresses the need for numerical methods in understanding multi-phase systems with large electromagnetic property contrast.

Chong Wang et al.

Summary: The study shows that for wire based plasma transferred arc (PTA)-laser hybrid additive manufacture, controlling various process parameters such as laser power, energy distribution, wire feed speed, travel speed, and laser beam size can lead to good bead shape and stable deposition process. The research emphasizes the importance of optimizing the operating regime for the hybrid process to achieve desired results and proposes a procedure for controlling the bead shape, which was demonstrated through deposited multi-layer single-pass walls.
