Forming mechanism of coke microparticles from polymerization of aqueous organics during hydrothermal carbonization process of biomass

Ruikun Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the growth mechanism of coke microparticles and found that their formation during hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) had a significant impact on the yield and properties of hydrochar. The coke microparticles were observed to undergo two stages of micronuclei formation and growth, involving the polymerization of dissolved organics and the bonding of micronuclei with aqueous organic molecules.

Development of carbon-based metal free electrochemical sensor for hydrogen peroxide by surface modification of carbon nanowalls

Fatemeh Bohlooli et al.

Summary: A novel metal-free amperometric sensor based on O-2/Ar plasma modified carbon nanowalls (CNW) was successfully developed for non-enzymatic detection of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The CNW treated with O-2/Ar: 1.0/10sccm showed the highest amperometric response, indicating the importance of both defects and oxygen-containing functional groups in electrochemical behavior of the electrode.

A mechanistic insight into glucose conversion in subcritical water: Complex reaction network and the effects of acid-base catalysis

Zhifeng Yan et al.

Summary: Based on density functional theory, a systematic investigation of glucose conversion in subcritical water showed differences in reaction pathways between fructose and glucose, with fructose favoring dehydration through a cyclic pathway. The conversion of 5-HMF to 1,2,4-Benzenetriol exhibited a high activation energy, and retro-aldol condensation of C4 compounds preferred the formation of C2 compounds. The study provides fundamental insights into the glucose conversion mechanism in subcritical water.

Sulfur Doping versus Hierarchical Pore Structure: The Dominating Effect on the Fe-N-C Site Density, Activity, and Selectivity in Oxygen Reduction Reaction Electrocatalysis

Giorgia Daniel et al.

Summary: Sulfur doping significantly affects the formation of Fe-Nx sites and the textural properties of Fe-N-C catalysts, increasing the microporosity of the carbon support. The catalytic activity of Fe-N-C does not directly depend on sulfur content, with the optimal sulfur/iron ratio close to 18. High or low sulfur doping levels have detrimental effects on Fe-Nx formation.
