Wood durability in terrestrial and aquatic environments - A review of biotic and abiotic influence factors

Brendan Nicholas Marais et al.

Summary: Factors such as temperature, moisture, wood-decaying fungi, bacteria, subterranean insects, and marine borers are important in the degradation of wood used in ground and water contact. The durability of wood is influenced by its inherent characteristics, including heartwood and sapwood differences. Wood durability testing methods, classification, and models for regional-level modeling are discussed.

Impact of Natural Degradation on the Aged Lignocellulose Fibers of Moroccan Cedar Softwood: Structural Elucidation by Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD)

Yousra Bouramdane et al.

Summary: The structure and degree of deterioration in four historical Moroccan cedar softwood samples of different aging time durations were investigated using FTIR and XRD. The study revealed significant hemicellulose deterioration, a decrease in cellulose crystallinity index, and alteration of lignin in the oldest samples. The results depended on the wood part exposed to weathering effects and the effects of aging and natural deterioration agents.

Chemical composition and phytotoxic activity of the essential oil of Artemisia sieversiana growing in Xinjiang, China

Chun-Yu Jiang et al.

Summary: The chemical profile and phytotoxic activity of the essential oil from Artemisia sieversiana were investigated. The major components were alpha-thujone and eucalyptol, which exhibited significant phytotoxic activity against several weed and grass species. The mixture of these compounds showed a stronger effect compared to each individual compound, suggesting a possible synergistic effect.
