Large-scale mitogenome sequencing reveals consecutive expansions of domestic taurine cattle and supports sporadic aurochs introgression

Vlatka Cubric-Curik et al.

Summary: This study conducted a comprehensive analysis of the mitochondrial genome of cattle, revealing different haplotypes and classifications, as well as providing evidence for interactions between wild aurochs and domesticated cattle during the domestication and dispersal of cattle in Europe.

Diversity of Mitochondrial DNA Haplogroups and Their Association with Bovine Antral Follicle Count

Hongfei Liu et al.

Summary: By sequencing the mtDNA D-loop region of Chinese Holstein cows, abundant genetic resources and two haplogroups with different maternal origins were found, which were associated with the number of antral follicles. These distinguished mutations could be considered as important genetic markers for cattle breeding.

Recovery of mitogenomes from whole genome sequences to infer maternal diversity in 1883 modern taurine and indicine cattle

Jigme Dorji et al.

Summary: This study used a large sequence database to assess maternal diversity in globally important cattle breeds based on their complete mitogenomes. The results showed that the mitogenomes of these cattle breeds were highly diverse, with 11 major haplogroups and 1309 unique haplotypes. Some African and indicine haplogroups were also found in European taurine breeds and composites. A new indicine subgroup mainly consisting of breeds from China was identified.

On the origin and diversification of Podolian cattle breeds: testing scenarios of European colonization using genome-wide SNP data

Gabriele Senczuk et al.

Summary: The study indicates that European Podolian cattle have higher genetic diversity compared to African taurine and Asian indicine breeds. Clustering analyses suggest a common genetic ancestry among Podolian breeds. The best-supported scenario of colonization points to two main waves of migrations.
