Scientific and technological developments in mating disruption of scale insects

Jose Carlos Franco et al.

Summary: Mating disruption is a species-specific and environmentally friendly pest management tactic that aims to interrupt mate-finding communication and prevent mating in pests. It has been successfully applied in small plots against scale pests, such as the vine mealybug and California red scale. The effectiveness of mating disruption is dependent on pest density and effective disruption timing late in the season. Technological advances, understanding of disruption mechanisms, and simplification of the registration process are key factors for the successful implementation of mating disruption.
