Filaggrin mutations in relation to skin barrier and atopic dermatitis in early infancy

Diagnosing atopic dermatitis in infancy using established diagnostic criteria: a cohort study

K. M. A. Endre et al.

Summary: Diagnosing atopic dermatitis (AD) in infants is challenging, the study found that using the UK Working Party (UKWP) and Hanifin and Rajka (H&R) criteria can determine the incidence and persistence of eczema and AD. The odds of AD were lower when eczema first appeared at 6 or 12 months, and higher in infants with eczema at multiple visits.

Skin barrier defects in atopic dermatitis: From old idea to new opportunity

Takeshi Yoshida et al.

Summary: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is the most common chronic skin inflammatory disease, with a profound impact on patients' quality of life. The clinical course, age of onset, and presence of allergic and non-allergic comorbidities vary greatly in AD. Skin barrier impairment is now recognized as a critical feature of AD, which may be explained by abnormalities within the layers of the epidermis.

Infant lung function: criteria for selecting tidal flow-volume loops

Karen Eline Stensby Bains et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the reliability of manual selection of tidal flow-volume (TFV) loops in awake infants with interrupted breathing cycles. The results showed that using standardized criteria, manual TFV loop selection provides a reliable alternative for lung function measures in these infants.

Advances in asthma: New understandings of asthma's natural history, risk factors, underlying mechanisms, and clinical management

Rachel L. Miller et al.

Summary: In the past two years, there has been significant growth in high-quality asthma research, leading to new understandings of asthma incidence, natural history, risk factors, and potential therapeutic interventions. The progress in understanding mechanisms of asthma development and exacerbations, as well as advancements in diagnostic tools and precision approaches, have been immense and impactful. Though further knowledge on novel therapeutics and different asthma phenotypes is needed, these recent advancements offer promising avenues for future asthma management.

Early intervention of atopic dermatitis as a preventive strategy for progression of food allergy

Alyssa Sweeney et al.

Summary: Atopic diseases such as atopic dermatitis and food allergy have been on the rise in industrialized countries in recent decades, posing a significant health burden. Allergic sensitization may occur through an impaired skin barrier, necessitating the prevention of skin barrier dysfunction. Ongoing research is focusing on the use of trilipid emollients for skin barrier repair and prevention of atopic dermatitis and food allergy.

Does the epithelial barrier hypothesis explain the increase in allergy, autoimmunity and other chronic conditions?

Cezmi A. Akdis

Summary: The increase in allergic, autoimmune, and chronic diseases may be related to epithelial barrier-damaging agents associated with industrialization, urbanization, and modern life. These diseases are more prevalent in industrialized countries and are on the rise in developing countries, affecting over one billion people globally.
