Freeze-thaw cycles increase the mobility of phosphorus fractions based on soil aggregate in restored wetlands

Yingxin Li et al.

Summary: The research findings indicate that freeze-thaw cycles decrease the stability of soil aggregates, leading to the mobility of phosphorus fractions, while soil with saturated moisture content helps transform available phosphorus into moderately available phosphorus, reducing the risk of phosphorus mobility after freeze-thaw cycles.

Effects of drying and simulated flooding on soil phosphorus dynamics from two contrasting UK grassland soils

Sidra U. Khan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of soil drying followed by flooding on soil phosphorus dynamics. The results showed that flooding of dried soils released more phosphorus compared to moist soils, potentially impacting soil fertility and surface water quality. The findings highlight the importance of antecedent soil conditions in determining phosphorus mobilisation during flooding events.

Global patterns and predictors of soil microbial biomass carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in terrestrial ecosystems

Zhiqiang Wang et al.

Summary: Soil microbes play crucial roles in regulating nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. This study provides comprehensive global-scale information on the distribution of soil microbial biomass carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus, and emphasizes the importance of soil organic carbon in predicting these nutrient concentrations. The generated global maps of soil microbial nutrients can be used to enhance Earth system models and improve our understanding of terrestrial nutrient cycling.

Release and transformation of phosphorus in sediment following seasonal freezing-thawing cycles

Zeyu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of seasonal freezing-thawing cycles on phosphorus release and transformation in river ice in the upper Yarlung Zangbo River. The results showed that freezing altered the characteristics of sediments, resulting in weakened phosphorus adsorption and increased phosphorus release. The destruction of organic matter and the presence of water also played important roles in phosphorus release and transformation.
