Molecular and stable isotope analysis (813C, 82H) of sedimentary n-alkanes in the St. Lawrence Estuary and Gulf, Quebec, Canada: Importance of even numbered n-alkanes in coastal systems

Anic Imfeld et al.

Summary: Sediments contain a variety of inorganic and organic components, with the composition of organics not fully characterized. Research focused on n-alkanes in coastal sediments shows variations in abundance and sources along the terrestrial-marine continuum. Isotopic analysis of odd and even n-alkanes can be used to determine their sources.

Plant wax and carbon isotope response to heat and drought in the conifer Juniperus monosperma

Aaron F. Diefendorf et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of temperature and drought on the plant wax composition of Juniper monosperma, finding that n-alkane concentrations significantly increase with temperature but other parameters remain unaffected. Carbon isotopic composition variations are mainly controlled by changes in species composition rather than climate changes. The results have implications for using n-alkane traits for paleoenvironmental reconstructions.

Paleohydrological dynamics in the Western Mediterranean during the last glacial cycle

Antonio Garcia-Alix et al.

Summary: Studying the paleohydrological dynamics in the western Mediterranean region provides insights into the impact of precipitation and moisture source changes on hydrogen isotopic signature, revealing the variations in precipitation patterns and their potential mechanisms. Additionally, the identification of the Western Mediterranean Humid Period (WMHP) and corresponding shifts in precipitation patterns suggest a connection to changes in the main rainy season.

Bulk and compound-specific δ13C and n-alkane indices in a palustrine intermontane record for assessing environmental changes over the past 320 ka: the Padul Basin (Southwestern Mediterranean realm)

Jose E. Ortiz et al.

Summary: By analyzing the Padul Basin record, this study found that the delta C-13 values of long-chain n-alkanes are reliable indicators of C-4/C-3 terrestrial vegetation composition in swamps, while the delta C-13 values of C-23 and C-25 alkanes mainly reflect phases of increased water level in lacustrine/palustrine water bodies. Long-chain homologues are abundant in terrestrial plants, and the delta C-13 shifts of medium-chain homologues are primarily limited by CO2 availability.

Mid-to Late Holocene climatic and anthropogenic influences in Mpondoland, South Africa

Annette Hahn et al.

Summary: Mpondoland on the South African east coast is influenced by temperate and tropical circulation and climate systems, with sediment records indicating regional climatic change and anthropogenic influence over the past 5500 years. The study uses various data sources to infer paleoclimatic shifts and reconstruct past human activity, providing evidence of human impacts and increased erosion as early as -1500 years ago. Downcore proxy analysis suggests that particularly humid conditions persisted from -900 to -300 cal yr BP, encompassing both the Medieval Climate Anomaly and the Little Ice Age.

Underlying Climate Controls in Triple Oxygen (16 O, 17 O, 18 O) and Hydrogen (1 H, 2 H) Isotopes Composition of Rainfall (Central Pyrenees)

Reyes Gimenez et al.

Summary: Studies on rainfall isotopic composition in the Iberian Peninsula are limited, with few providing analyses on triple oxygen isotopes. This research in the Central South Pyrenees of Spain found that temperature variations play a key role in controlling isotopic composition, along with the influence of moisture sources and airflow trajectories.

Transformation of n-alkanes from plant to soil: a review

Carrie L. Thomas et al.

Summary: The study reviewed the formation and transformation of n-alkanes in soil organic matter (SOM), finding a general decrease in n-alkane concentration with time or depth, and preferential degradation of odd-chain length and shorter chain length n-alkanes. It also highlighted the lack of data transparency and standardization in lipid biomarker studies.

Pollen and plant diversity relationships in a Mediterranean montane area

Simon E. Connor et al.

Summary: Research shows a significant relationship between pollen diversity and the diversity of plant taxa in the surrounding vegetation in a mountainous area of the Western Mediterranean region. Exclusion of trees and standardization of sample size yield the strongest richness relationships, while three turnover metrics produce similar results emphasizing different components of beta diversity. Fossil pollen has potential as a rich source of information on past biodiversity in the Mediterranean region.
