Marine ecosystem restoration in a changing ocean

Roberto Danovaro et al.

Summary: Multiple human impacts lead to ongoing habitat loss and decline in biodiversity. Ecological restoration serves as a major tool to reverse this trend. Despite challenges in marine ecosystem restoration, pilot actions by the MERCES project in European waters demonstrate potential for restoration initiatives in the marine environment.

Identifying Priorities for the Protection of Deep Mediterranean Sea Ecosystems Through an Integrated Approach

Emanuela Fanelli et al.

Summary: The benthic habitats of the deep Mediterranean Sea are facing increasing threats from human pressures, including fisheries, pollution, littering, oil and gas exploration, and climate change. International frameworks exist for the protection of deep-sea ecosystems, but there are challenges in identifying areas needing protection and implementing effective conservation measures. By comparing different analyses, priority areas for conservation in the deep Mediterranean Sea can be identified based on ecological relevance, connectivity, and the level of anthropogenic impacts. The results provide a strategy for ecosystem-based conservation in the deep Mediterranean Sea.
