Cadmium accelerates bacterial oleic acid production to promote fat accumulation in Caenorhabditis elegans

Xueqi Ma et al.

Summary: The study revealed that exposure to cadmium induces fat accumulation in nematodes, a process mediated by live bacteria. Cadmium perturbs metabolites in bacteria, notably oleic acid, leading to increased fat deposition in nematodes regardless of the cultivated system. Additionally, Vitamin D3 showed significant potential in preventing cadmium- or oleic acid-induced fat storage.

Effect of site hydrological conditions and soil aggregate sizes on the stabilization of heavy metals (Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) by biochar

Jiali Shentu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the immobilization effect of biochar on heavy metals in soil, showing significant decreases in leaching toxicity of Cu and Ni but relatively insignificant effects on Pb and Zn. Better immobilization effects were observed in the fluctuating zone and saturated zone, with a significant increase in the residual fraction of heavy metals after the addition of biochar.

Isolation of heavy metal-immobilizing and plant growth-promoting bacteria and their potential in reducing Cd and Pb uptake in water spinach

Xiaoyu Wang et al.

Summary: This study discovered polyamine-producing strains of bacteria that are capable of immobilizing and reducing the uptake of Cd and Pb in water spinach. The bacteria achieved this through metal ion chelation and cell adsorption. Inoculating water spinach with these bacteria resulted in significantly lower Cd and Pb contents, higher rhizosphere soil pH and polyamine contents, and lower levels of acid-soluble Cd and Pb fractions in the soil. Furthermore, the bacteria enriched the relative abundances of plant growth-promoting and polyamine-producing bacteria in the rhizosphere, enhancing water spinach's resistance to Cd and Pb toxicity.

Poly-γ-glutamic acid improves water-stable aggregates, nitrogen and phosphorus uptake efficiency, water-fertilizer productivity, and economic benefit in barren desertified soils of Northwest China

Jiaping Liang et al.

Summary: The use of gamma-PGA significantly improved soil water storage, soil macro-aggregates, aboveground dry matter, cotton yield, and nutrient uptake efficiency. However, the water-fertilizer productivity and net profit did not show a continuous increase with increasing gamma-PGA application rates, with the most optimal rate identified as 65 kg ha(-1).
