The chemodiversity of polar lipidomes of microalgae from different taxa

Daniela Couto et al.

Summary: This study characterized and compared the polar lipidome of seven species of microalgae from three phyla, finding that each microalga had a unique polar lipid signature, allowing for possible distinction at lower taxonomic levels. Phospholipids and betaine lipids were the most important lipid species for discriminating between microalgal species. The specificity of microalgae lipidome favors the use of selected microalgae as bio-factories for specific lipids with high added value and a multitude of biological, sustainable, and ecological applications.

Food grade extraction of Chlorella vulgaris polar lipids: A comparative lipidomic study

Daniela Couto et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficiency of lipid extraction from Chlorella vulgaris and compared the effects of food-grade ethanol, ultrasound-assisted ethanol, and dichloromethane/methanol. The results showed that ultrasound-assisted ethanol and dichloromethane/methanol had the highest extraction yields, and the fatty acid profiles were identical among all extracts. However, the polar lipidome of the ethanol extracts was significantly different from the other two extracts. These findings are important for obtaining high yields of omega-3 and omega-6-rich extracts from C. vulgaris for food applications.

Environmental impact and nutritional value of food products using the seaweed Saccharina latissima

Petronella Margaretha Slegers et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the environmental impact of cultivating and using Saccharina latissima seaweed in food products through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The results show that under current cultivation practices, seaweed cultivation significantly contributes to the environmental impact of assessed food products. However, with more efficient infrastructure and higher yields in future cultivation scenarios, the environmental impact of seaweed cultivation can be reduced. Additionally, including seaweeds in vegetarian burgers or as salt replacements in diets can have a positive effect on reducing environmental impacts.

Chemoplasticity of the polar lipid profile of the microalgae Chlorella vulgaris grown under heterotrophic and autotrophic conditions

Daniela Couto et al.

Summary: This study characterized the polar lipidome of Chlorella vulgaris grown under autotrophic and heterotrophic conditions, revealing differences in lipid species and abundance distribution. Heterotrophic cultures had a higher abundance of low unsaturated species, while autotrophic cultures were rich in highly unsaturated glycolipids and lyso species. The fatty acids profile showed a high content of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in autotrophic cultures and omega-6 fatty acids in heterotrophic cultures. The two lipid extracts exhibited high antioxidant activity and inhibitory capacity for cyclooxygenase-2, providing evidence of polar lipid plasticity in microalgae for biotechnology applications.
