The Interplay between Autonomic Nervous System and Inflammation across Systemic Autoimmune Diseases

Chiara Bellocchi et al.

Summary: The autonomic nervous system and the immune system are closely related, regulating immune response and inflammation. Imbalance can lead to chronic conditions, such as systemic autoimmune diseases. Vagal stimulation techniques offer a potential solution to improve symptoms and reduce ANS dysfunction in chronic diseases.

The Systolic Pulmonary Arterial Pressure Liaises Impaired Cardiac Autonomic Control to Pro-inflammatory Status in Systemic Sclerosis Patients

Gabriel D. Rodrigues et al.

Summary: The current study aimed to test the relationship between systolic pulmonary arterial pressures (PAPs) and cardiac autonomic modulation and pro-inflammatory status in systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients. The findings showed significant differences in cardiac autonomic modulation and inflammatory status between patients with higher and lower PAPs. These findings have important implications for the assessment, monitoring, and treatment of SSc patients.

The Relationship Between Autonomic Dysfunction of the Gastrointestinal Tract and Emotional Distress in Patients With Systemic Sclerosis

Dana DiRenzo et al.

Summary: This study found that increased symptom burden related to gastrointestinal dysautonomia in SSc patients is associated with emotional distress. The research also revealed some associated features in the multivariable analysis model, providing guidance for optimizing patient care.

Effects of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation on cardiovascular autonomic control in health and disease

Angelica Carandina et al.

Summary: Autonomic nervous system dysfunction is a common feature of cardiovascular diseases, with sympathetic modulation playing a key role. Current therapies focus on inhibiting sympathetic activity, but invasive procedures and drug resistance present challenges. Transcutaneous stimulation of the auricular branch of the vagus nerve (tVNS) is a promising non-invasive alternative with effects comparable to surgical implant VNS.

Cardiovascular Autonomic Control, Sleep and Health Related Quality of Life in Systemic Sclerosis

Angelica Carandina et al.

Summary: The study found that sleep impairment was related to sympathetic predominance at rest measured as low-frequency/high-frequency ratio (LF/HF) (r = 0.48 and p = 0.033); poorer sleep quality was related to higher pain values (r = 0.48 and p = 0.034) and depressive symptoms (r = 0.82 and p < 0.01); higher pain scores were related to higher cardiovascular vagal modulation and higher disability indexes (r = 0.47 and p = 0.038 & r = 0.55 and p = 0.012, respectively).
