Mother- to- Child HIV Transmission among Pregnant Women in a City with the Highest Rates of HIV in Brazil

Mariana Menegotto et al.

Summary: The rate of mother-to-child transmission of HIV in a hospital in Porto Alegre, Brazil was investigated in this study. The study found that the rate was 2.18%, and the factors associated with transmission included lack of prenatal care, late maternal HIV diagnosis, syphilis infection during pregnancy, high viral load, and inadequate antiretroviral therapy during pregnancy.

Mother-to-Child HIV Transmission among Pregnant Women in a City with the Highest Rates of HIV in Brazil

Mariana Menegotto et al.

Summary: The study found that the Mother-to-Child Transmission (MTCT) rate of HIV in Porto Alegre after the introduction of the two-drug prophylaxis for high-risk newborns was 2.18%. Persistent cases of HIV MTCT were predominantly found among women with absence of antenatal care, late HIV diagnosis, syphilis coinfection, high viral load, and inadequate antiretroviral therapy during pregnancy.
