Evaluation of the efficiency of nanoparticles for increasing α-amylase enzyme activity for removing starch stain from paper artifacts

Mahmoud Abdel-Nasser et al.

Summary: Starch stain is a common issue in paper artifacts, causing deformation and microbial deterioration. This study utilized nanoparticles and an alpha-amylase enzyme to remove starch stains from paper surfaces. The addition of silver nanoparticles increased the enzyme's activity by 160%, while gold nanoparticles enhanced it by 140%.

Evaluation of MMI/acrylate nanocomposite with hydroxyapatite as a novel paste for gap filling of archaeological bones

Gomaa Abdel-Maksoud et al.

Summary: A novel paste for gap filling of archaeological bones was prepared using in-situ microemulsion polymerization of montmorillonite/methyl methacrylate-ethyl acrylate-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate terpolymeric nanocomposite. The paste exhibited excellent stability and resistance against thermal ageing. The addition of the nanocomposite improved the resistance to reduction in contact angle, density, porosity, and water absorption during ageing.

Preparation of bactericidal zinc oxide nanoparticles loaded carboxymethyl cellulose/polyethylene glycol cryogel for gap filling of archaeological bones

Mehrez E. El-Naggar et al.

Summary: This study designed and evaluated a unique porous structure of carboxymethyl cellulose cryogel loaded with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) for gap filling of archaeological bone artifacts. The addition of high concentration of ZnO NPs improved the appearance, stability, mechanical characteristics, and resistance against bacteria and yeast of the cryogel. The cryogel loaded with ZnO NPs is suitable for filling gaps and cracks of archaeological bones.

Isolation and Characterization of Fungal Endophytes Isolated from Medicinal Plant Ephedra pachyclada as Plant Growth-Promoting

Ahmed Mohamed Aly Khalil et al.

Summary: Endophytic fungi isolated from leaves of Ephedra pachyclada showed varied antimicrobial activity, plant growth-promoting properties, and enzymatic activity, with Penicillium commune EP-5 demonstrating maximum IAA productivity. The selected fungal endophytes applied as bioinoculant to maize plants improved root lengths and vegetative growth features significantly compared to uninoculated plants.

Biotechnological application of plant growth-promoting endophytic bacteria isolated from halophytic plants to ameliorate salinity tolerance of Vicia faba L.

Hany A. M. Mahgoub et al.

Summary: Salinity is a major global issue affecting crop production, and endophytic bacteria can help improve plant salt tolerance. This study identified various endophytic strains with plant growth-promoting activities and found that inoculating bean seeds with specific strains mitigated the harmful effects of soil salinity, enhancing plant growth and nutrient accumulation. The co-inoculation of Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus thuringiensis showed the greatest potential in alleviating the negative impact of soil salinity stress, offering a bio-approach for reclaiming salinity-stressed soils.

Documentary heritage: fungal deterioration in Compact Discs

Anna M. Palermo et al.

Summary: Recent years have witnessed a rapid growth in the use of digital media for cultural heritage archiving, with CD-R becoming a popular tool for document preservation. However, studies have shown that CD-Rs are prone to biological deterioration by airborne fungi, highlighting the need for proper storage conditions and regular monitoring of environmental factors such as temperature and relative humidity. Efforts should also be made to periodically clean optical media to prevent fungal colonization and material loss.

Mohamed A. Ismail et al.

Summary: This study isolated bacterial and fungal endophytic strains from common bean root plants, which were found to promote plant growth and exhibit better results in increasing plant biomass, photosynthetic pigments, carbohydrate and protein contents, antioxidant enzyme activity compared to exogenously applied hormones. The endophyte Brevibacillus agri (PB5) showed high potential as a stimulator for common bean plant growth and productivity.

Nagah S. Saada et al.

Summary: Green chemistry is a suitable approach for sustainable preparation of nanoparticles, as demonstrated by the use of tea tree leaves extract to prepare silver nanoparticles in this study. The Ag-NPs showed microbiostatic effects against tested microbes and did not significantly affect the chemical and mechanical characteristics of disinfected parchment.
