Addressing main challenges in the tertiary treatment of urban wastewater: are homogeneous photodriven AOPs the answer?

Luigi Rizzo

Summary: This review discusses the challenges in the tertiary treatment of urban wastewater and the advancements of homogeneous photodriven advanced oxidation processes (HP-AOPs) in addressing these challenges. It analyzes and discusses the differences between solar- and UV-driven HP-AOPs, acidic vs. neutral pH photo-Fenton, as well as homogeneous and heterogeneous photodriven AOPs. The review also provides recommendations for selecting model pollutants and validating results under realistic conditions.

Trace organic contaminants removal from municipal wastewater using the FluHelik reactor: From laboratory-scale to pre-pilot scale

Jonathan C. Espindola et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using the innovative FluHelik photoreactor for removing antimicrobial drugs through a photochemical UVC/H2O2 process. Experimental studies demonstrated the impact of various factors on the efficiency of GAT removal, and showed that the photochemical space-time yield (PSTY) is a reliable metric for quantitatively measuring the reactor performance.
