Stability and tip streaming of a surfactant-loaded drop in an extensional flow. Influence of surface viscosity

M. A. Herrada et al.

Summary: In this study, we numerically investigate the nonlinear stationary states of a droplet covered with an insoluble surfactant in a uniaxial extensional flow. We find that the presence of surfactant significantly reduces the stability interval of capillary numbers and has little effect on the droplet deformation and stability in relation to droplet viscosity. Tip streaming only occurs in the presence of surfactants, and the critical eigenmode for tip streaming is similar to the central pinching mode for a clean interface. Viscous surface stress decreases the damping rate of the dominant mode, and shear viscous surface stress alters the nature of tip streaming in the supercritical regime.

Oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions formation and demulsification

Ana M. Sousa et al.

Summary: In the petroleum industry, oil and water emulsions are common, and it is crucial to study both the emulsification and demulsification processes to find effective solutions. While research in this area has been extensive, there is still a need for a systematic review to understand the latest developments and pros and cons of emulsifiers and demulsification techniques.

Single-cell mass spectrometry

Mohammad Tajik et al.

Summary: Recent advances in mass spectrometry (MS) have allowed for the measurement of multiple molecules in single cells. This is crucial for understanding the molecular heterogeneity and function of individual cells. In this review, we discuss different methods of single-cell MS, including high-throughput, targeted, mass cytometry-based approaches, and antibody-free methods, for detailed profiling of the proteome and metabolome of single cells. We also explore the advantages and disadvantages of these methods and the challenges and opportunities for further improvements in single-cell MS. These methods have found applications in biomedical research, such as revealing tumor heterogeneity and conducting high-content drug screening.
