A novel pyrene-based fluorescent probe for Al3+detection

Yulong Liu et al.

Summary: Based on the classical Schiff base reaction, a fluorescent probe PAI was designed and synthesized through structural modification by introducing Schiff base structure to pyrene unit. The synthesized PAI was characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and HRMS. PAI is a turn-on probe with high selectivity for specific recognition of Al3+ ion, and has a lower limit of detection compared to many other reported probes. The addition of Al3+ ion breaks the carbon-nitrogen double bond of Schiff base in PAI, resulting in a product without PET property and exhibiting enhanced fluorescence and blue color. PAI can also recognize Al3+ ion through test papers, which is beneficial for future research on Al3+ ion sensing.

One step synthesis of crosslinked fluorescent microspheres for the effective and selective sensing of explosives in aqueous media

Ece Akkoc et al.

Summary: New pyrene-based polymeric microbeads were synthesized in one step and used as fluorescence chemosensor for high precision detection of nitroaromatic compounds. The microbeads could be dispersed homogeneously and stably in both aqueous and organic media, facilitating detection studies. The microbeads showed the best fluorescence quenching activities against nitroaromatic compounds in aqueous media.

The Hyperporphyrin Concept: A Contemporary Perspective

Carl C. Wamser et al.

Summary: The Gouterman four-orbital model explains porphyrin UV-visible spectra as influenced by four key molecular orbitals, with two nearly degenerate HOMOs and two exactly degenerate LUMOs under D4h symmetry. These orbitals are well separated from others, and the transitions among them are involved in normal spectra. Additional peaks or significant shifts in the spectra can occur when extra orbitals in this energy range appear due to the presence of a coordinating atom, leading to LMCT or MLCT transitions. Hyperporphyrins show dramatic effects on spectra and can be generated by relatively simple changes or structural variations.

Pyrene-porphyrin based ratiometric fluorescent sensor array for discrimination of glycosaminoglycans

Meiting Hou et al.

Summary: A ratiometric sensor array Py-PP was constructed to discriminate GAGs, showing excellent discrimination ability towards Hep, HA, Chs, and DS. The sensor array was effective in both PBS and 5% serum media, and could detect trace GAG contaminants in Hep with 100% accuracy. The Py-PP sensor array proved to be a powerful tool for accurate discrimination of GAGs.

Aggregation-induced emission-active hyperbranched polymers conjugated with tetraphenylethylene for nitroaromatic explosive detection

Nagendra Kalva et al.

Summary: This study developed a facile synthesis method for AIE-active HPGs and designed a solid-state sensor for detecting nitroaromatic explosives. The resulting AIE-active HPGs showed excellent AIE characteristics and high sensitivity towards nitro compounds by conjugating tetraphenylethylene moieties onto the periphery of the HPGs.

Imidazoporphyrins with appended polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: To conjugate or not to conjugate?

Kirill P. Birin et al.

Summary: This study reports the synthesis and characterization of new dyads with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, investigating electronic communication between the tetrapyrrolic macrocycles and PAH moieties using UV-Vis and fluorescence spectra. DFT calculations revealed efficient conjugation in some dyads, which was further confirmed using the analysis of ellipticities of bond critical points.

Pyrene-Hydrazone-π•••Hole Coupled Turn-on Fluorescent and Naked-Eye Colorimetric Sensor for Cyanide: Role of Homogeneous π-Hole Dispersion in Anion Selectivity

Vanthana Jeyasingh et al.

Summary: In this study, a pyrene based probe associated with pi center-dot-hydrazone as one of the recognizing elements is synthesized and transformed into a selective colorimetric and turn-on fluorescent sensor (L-3) for cyanide anion. The chemo sensor exhibits high selectivity towards cyanide anion through a photo electron transfer (PET) mechanism, with a binding strength and sensitivity of 2.0 X 10(4) and 4.44 x 10(-4) respectively. Comparison with previously reported receptors L-1 and L-2 shows the homogeneous dispersion of pi center-dot-hole in the aromatic ring governing the selectivity of the receptor towards cyanide anion.
