Characterization of Pottery from Teotihuacan Using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy and Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy

Hugo Sobral et al.

Summary: Pottery sherds from Teotihuacan, Mexico, belonging to different periods were investigated using LIBS and ICP-OES. The results showed similarities in elemental composition among most samples, but also revealed associations with foreign ceramic groups in some cases. Analysis of red pigments on ceramic bodies and ceramic pastes using LIBS and ICP-OES techniques provided insights into local production and imported ceramics.

A Stand-Off Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) System Applicable for Martian Rocks Studies

Changqing Liu et al.

Summary: This study developed a laboratory standoff LIBS system combined with a Martian simulation chamber to examine the geochemical characteristics of igneous rocks and applied three multivariate analysis methods to characterize the samples. Results show that PCA is better suited for identifying igneous rock lithology with higher correlation than using predicted elemental ratios derived by PLS and LASSO. This preliminary study provides suitable methods for the elemental prediction and geochemical identification of Martian rocks.
