Sialic acid-containing glycolipids mediate binding and viral entry of SARS-CoV-2

Linh Nguyen et al.

Summary: Evidence suggests that host glycans, specifically glycolipids containing sialic acid, play a role in facilitating the entry of SARS-CoV-2 virus into host cells by binding to the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the spike protein. Depletion of cell surface sialic acid levels through various methods decreases RBD binding and infection of the virus, indicating the importance of sialylated glycans in viral entry.

Naked-Eye Detection of Morphine by Au@Ag Nanoparticles-Based Colorimetric Chemosensors

Tahereh Rohani Bastami et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel and facile colorimetric assay based on Au@AgNPs as a chemosensor for the naked-eye detection of morphine was developed. The aggregation of Au@AgNPs upon exposure to morphine resulted in a visible color change from light-yellow to brown. The method showed excellent stability, selectivity, prompt detection, and cost-effectiveness.

Layer-by-layer assembly of composite conductive fiber-based organic electrochemical transistor for highly sensitive detection of sialic acid

Rufeng Zhu et al.

Summary: A novel conductive fiber composite based on layer-by-layer assembly technology has been successfully prepared. The composite fiber exhibits flexibility, conductivity, and washability. The fiber-based organic electrochemical transistors (FECTs) assembled from the composite fiber show excellent electrical properties and stability. A sialic acid biosensor based on the modified gate electrode of FECTs has been developed, which can detect the sialic acid content in saliva. The sensor can be seamlessly integrated into fabrics, providing an efficient detection platform for wearable healthcare applications.

The role of cell surface sialic acids for SARS-CoV-2 infection

Xue-Long Sun

Summary: SARS-CoV-2 may use sialic acids on host cell surfaces as initial attachment factors before binding to the ACE2 receptor, potentially in a two-step attachment fashion. Recent studies suggest that sialic acids may enhance viral binding to the ACE2 receptor, but sialic acids on the ACE2 receptor prevent interaction with the spike protein. Additionally, gangliosides have been identified as potential ligands for the receptor-binding domain of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein.
