Recent advances in PCB removal from historically contaminated environmental matrices

Kamila Sredlova et al.

Summary: PCBs, despite being restricted in the 1970s, remain hazardous contaminants due to their bioaccumulative and persistent nature. Remediation of historically contaminated matrices is challenging and requires a combination of different techniques and approaches.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the Dissolved Phase, Particulate Matter, and Sediment of the Sele River, Southern Italy: A Focus on Distribution, Risk Assessment, and Sources

Paolo Montuori et al.

Summary: The Sele River in southern Italy is an important river in the Campania Region. The distribution and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the river were studied, and it was found that industrial wastewater and vehicle emissions contribute to the PAH concentrations in the water and sediment. This pollution poses a risk to the ecosystem and human health.

Long-term study of heavy metal pollution in the northern Hangzhou Bay of China: temporal and spatial distribution, contamination evaluation, and potential ecological risk

Hao Xu et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the coastal ecosystem in the northern Hangzhou Bay is facing increasing heavy metal contamination due to anthropogenic activities. While the seawater showed decreasing concentrations of Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, and Hg but increasing concentrations of As, sediments demonstrated rising levels of heavy metals, except for Hg. The potential ecological risk, mostly attributed to Cd and Hg, was low in general but reached moderate levels in some years, emphasizing the need for ongoing monitoring of heavy metal pollution in the area.

Potential health risk assessment of HFRs, PCBs, and OCPs in the Yellow River basin

Yi-ping Chen et al.

Summary: The concentrations of PBDEs, NBFRs, DP, PCBs, and OCPs were analyzed in water, soil, and maize samples from the Yellow River Basin to understand the status of POPs and associated health risks. The results showed considerable organic pollution, with PCBs and OCPs posing potential health risks, indicating the need for implementation of national emission standards for POPs.
