Premenstrual syndrome and premenstrual dysphoric disorder in adolescents

Khalida Itriyeva

Summary: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) are two premenstrual disorders characterized by symptoms that occur in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and have a negative impact on individuals' psychosocial functioning. PMS, more common than PMDD, is associated with symptoms such as fatigue, irritability, and mood swings, while PMDD is characterized by more severe symptoms. Treatment focuses on symptom alleviation and improving quality of life, with pharmacologic therapy and non-pharmacologic approaches being effective options.
