Dietary fucoidan from a brown marine algae (Ecklonia cava) attenuates lipid accumulation in differentiated 3T3-L1 cells and alleviates high-fat diet-induced obesity in mice

Hyo-Geun Lee et al.

Summary: Fucoidan from marine algae, specifically Ecklonia cava, has been found to have anti-obesity effects. The purified fucoidan fractions from Ecklonia cava showed significant reductions in lipid accumulation in fat cells, both in vitro and in high-fat diet-induced obese mice. Oral administration of Ecklonia cava extract led to reduced body weight, serum lipid content, and white adipose tissue mass. These findings suggest that Ecklonia cava extract and its fucoidan fractions can be used as anti-obesity ingredients in the food and nutraceutical industries.

Alternative model organisms for toxicological fingerprinting of relevant parameters in food and nutrition

Georg Sandner et al.

Summary: In the field of (food) toxicology, there is a growing trend to replace animal trials with alternative methods to assess adverse health effects in humans. While advancements have been made in in vitro cell culture and in silico modeling, there is a lack of accurate predictions of metabolic actions. Alternative in vivo models are expected to bridge the gap between cell culture and animal trials.

Seaweed-Derived Proteins and Peptides: Promising Marine Bioactives

Javier Echave et al.

Summary: Seaweeds, a typical food in East-Asian cuisine, have been attributed with several beneficial health effects. Seaweed proteins contain various enzymes, glycoproteins, cell wall-attached proteins, red algae phycobiliproteins, lectins, peptides, or mycosporine-like amino acids, which show significant antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and other bioactivities. Understanding seaweed proteins and derived molecules is important for potential nutraceutical, cosmetic, or pharmaceutical applications.
