GABAergic mechanisms in the suprachiasmatic nucleus that influence circadian rhythm

Daisuke Ono et al.

Summary: The central circadian clock in the mammalian suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) is regulated by the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA), which influences circadian rhythms through intracellular Cl- concentration. The excitatory and inhibitory effects of GABA in the SCN are influenced by factors such as day-length, time, and region within the SCN. GABA mediates oscillatory coupling of circadian rhythms and refines circadian output rhythms, suggesting a downstream role in regulating the physiological and behavioral temporal order.

Maternal vitamin A deficiency impairs cholinergic and nitrergic neurons, leading to gastrointestinal dysfunction in rat offspring via RARβ

Mei Tan et al.

Summary: Maternal vitamin A deficiency during pregnancy can lead to significant reductions in cholinergic and nitrergic enteric neurons density in the colon of rat offspring, resulting in gastrointestinal dysfunction. Interestingly, maternal vitamin A supplementation during pregnancy can rescue these changes. In vitro experiments showed that retinoic acid exposure promoted the differentiation of enteric neurospheres into cholinergic and nitrergic neurons, possibly through upregulating RAR beta expression and enhancing SOX10 expression.

Effects of Saffron Extract on Sleep Quality: A Randomized Double-Blind Controlled Clinical Trial

Barbara D. Pachikian et al.

Summary: The study found that supplementing with saffron extract for 6 weeks led to improvements in sleep duration and quality, including increased time in bed, improved ease of falling asleep, and overall improvement in sleep quality. This suggests that saffron extract may be a natural and safe nutritional strategy to improve sleep.

Recent Progress in Non-motor Features of Parkinson's Disease with a Focus on Circadian Rhythm Dysregulation

Yufei Liu et al.

Summary: Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease, characterized by both motor and non-motor symptoms, with circadian rhythm dysregulation emerging as a key feature that may play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of PD. Recent research progress has focused on understanding altered circadian rhythm in PD, from clinical manifestations to underlying causes of circadian disorders in PD.

Unraveling the physiological roles of retinoic acid receptor-related orphan receptor α

Ji Min Lee et al.

Summary: RORα, an orphan receptor protein, activates specific genes in response to circadian cellular changes and its disruption is associated with cancer, inflammation, and metabolic diseases. Manipulating RORα activity may offer new treatment options for various diseases. Pharmaceutical companies are exploring molecules that can bind and activate RORα for therapeutic purposes, especially natural products.
