VDBFusion: Flexible and Efficient TSDF Integration of Range Sensor Data

Ignacio Vizzo et al.

Summary: This paper presents a practical approach to volumetric surface reconstruction based on truncated signed distance functions (TSDFs), which is suitable for systems with different environments and sensors. By utilizing the OpenVDB library, an effective 3D map representation is achieved, and a C++ and Python library is provided to solve volumetric mapping problems with TSDFs.

Fast Sparse LiDAR Odometry Using Self-Supervised Feature Selection on Intensity Images

Tiziano Guadagnino et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel approach that utilizes the intensity channel of 3D LiDAR scans to accurately estimate ego-motion at a high frequency. The method extracts sparse salient points from intensity images using data-driven feature extraction architectures, originally designed for RGB images, and computes the relative pose between successive scans. Experimental evaluation demonstrates that the proposed approach provides reliable ego-motion estimation at a much higher frequency than the sensor frame rate, while improving estimation accuracy online.

CT-ICP: Real-time Elastic LiDAR Odometry with Loop Closure

Pierre Dellenbach et al.

Summary: In this study, we propose a new real-time LiDAR-only odometry method called CT-ICP, which introduces combined continuity and discontinuity for improved scan matching accuracy and robustness. A complete SLAM system is built on top of this odometry, utilizing a fast pure LiDAR loop detection method for precise localization. Testing on multiple datasets demonstrates the stable and reliable performance of the proposed method.

Poisson Surface Reconstruction for LiDAR Odometry and Mapping

Ignacio Vizzo et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel approach for LiDAR odometry and mapping, using Poisson surface reconstruction to compute triangle meshes for improved mapping quality and vehicle pose estimation. Surface reconstruction is done in a sliding window fashion to create accurate local maps that can be combined into a global map, showing more geometric details in the 3D map. Evaluation shows higher geometric accuracies compared to other map representations.
