Baseflow and water resilience variability in two water management units in southeastern Brazil

Lucas Vituri Santarosa et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of hydrogeological frameworks on streamflow fluctuations in two water resource management units in Sao Paulo state, Brazil. The results show that basins overlying crystalline and sedimentary aquifers have significant contributions from baseflow, with PCJ basins being more vulnerable to drought due to higher dependence on surface water.

Water Security in an Uncertain Future: Contrasting Realities from an Availability-Demand Perspective

Jullian S. Sone et al.

Summary: Understanding the impact of climate change on water security is crucial for addressing vulnerabilities caused by extreme weather events. This study assessed the future water security of two basins and identified drivers of insecurity by comparing water demand with probabilistic levels of water availability. The findings highlight the need for stricter measures to balance water availability and demand in order to improve water security in an uncertain future.

Hydrologic Impact of Climate Change in the Jaguari River in the Cantareira Reservoir System

Leonardo Moreno Domingues et al.

Summary: A recent drought in Southeast Brazil affected the water supply to Sao Paulo megacity, raising concerns about the impact of climate change on water resources. The study found that changes in rainfall are the key factor influencing the water budget. Higher carbon dioxide concentrations reduced evapotranspiration but increased discharge. These findings have significant implications for water management.

Future global urban water scarcity and potential solutions

Chunyang He et al.

Summary: Urbanization and climate change are exacerbating global urban water scarcity, with the number of people affected projected to increase significantly by 2050, particularly in countries like India. Large cities and megacities will be most severely affected, and while infrastructure investment can help alleviate water scarcity, potential environmental trade-offs must be carefully considered.

An improved calibration and uncertainty analysis approach using a multicriteria sequential algorithm for hydrological modeling

Hongjing Wu et al.

Summary: A multi-criteria sequential calibration and uncertainty analysis (MS-CUA) method is proposed to enhance the efficiency and performance of hydrological modeling. Compared with traditional methods, the MS-CUA method showed better-calibrated results and more balanced uncertainty analysis in two case studies.

Jose A. Marengo et al.

Summary: The Pantanal region in South America has been experiencing severe drought and wildfires in recent years, leading to a decrease in hydrological levels, transportation restrictions, and impacts on biodiversity. This has had serious consequences on both natural and human systems.
