Litter origins, accumulation rates, and hierarchical composition on urban roadsides of the Inland Empire, California

Win Cowger et al.

Summary: Urban areas are a major source of litter worldwide, with roadsides being the primary accumulation location. This study found that litter is predominantly transported to roadsides by human travel, rather than wind or runoff. Most litter sources were found to be nearby to where the litter was observed. Surprisingly, litter accumulation rates remained stable despite repeated cleanups and the COVID-19 stay-at-home orders. Plastic and paper were identified as the most abundant litter materials.

Learning from natural sediments to tackle microplastics challenges: A multidisciplinary perspective

Kryss Waldschlager et al.

Summary: Although the study of microplastics in the aquatic environment is still in its infancy, valuable insights can be gained by drawing on research in sedimentology. By analyzing existing literature, we identify seven research goals that are crucial to improving our understanding of microplastics, and propose relevant tasks to achieve each goal.

Microplastic Spectral Classification Needs an Open Source Community: Open Specy to the Rescue!

Win Cowger et al.

Summary: Open Specy is a free software solution for spectral classification, offering users the ability to view, process, identify, and share microplastic spectra. It stands out as the only open source software with a community library, and provides a range of tools for spectrum processing to build a diverse reference library for microplastics.

Natural and anthropogenic controls on sediment rating curves in northern California coastal watersheds

Adam Fisher et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of various factors on erosion rates in watersheds along the north coast of California, including tectonic uplift and timber harvest activity. Different relationships, such as power and threshold relationships, were observed in suspended sediment rating curves within the study watersheds. The offsets and slopes of the SRCs varied systematically with regional tectonic uplift and were influenced by intensive timber harvest events.

Concentration Depth Profiles of Microplastic Particles in River Flow and Implications for Surface Sampling

Win Cowger et al.

Summary: Current methods for monitoring and modeling the transport of microplastic pollution in rivers rely heavily on surface sampling and assumptions about concentration depth profiles, leading to potential uncertainties. To improve accuracy, a broader adoption of depth-integrated sampling, characterization of particle concentration depth profiles, and estimation of uncertainties in depth-averaged concentration based on the sampling approach would be beneficial.

Effects of Urban Hydrology on Plastic Transport in a Subtropical River

Charlotte J. Haberstroh et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of seasonal and longitudinal variability on river plastic loads in Florida, revealing highly variable plastic loads along the river with evident urban pollution impact in urban sections. Drivers of plastic pollution varied at different sites along the river, with rainfall seasonality dictating transport in less urbanized areas and anthropogenic factors playing a greater role in urban sites.
