Monitoring gully erosion in the European Union: A novel approach based on the Land Use/Cover Area frame survey (LUCAS)

Pasquale Borrelli et al.

Summary: The European Commission has identified soil erosion as a significant threat to soil resources in the European Union (EU). This study integrates a soil erosion module into the 2018 LUCAS Topsoil Survey to monitor gully erosion in the EU and UK. The results show that the method is effective in detecting gully erosion and mapping permanent gullies, but less effective for detecting ephemeral gullies.

Collapse inhibition mechanism analysis and durability properties of cement-stabilized Pisha sandstone

Kaiqiang Geng et al.

Summary: This study aims to prevent the collapsing of Pisha sandstone in water by adding cement and investigates its effects on the properties and durability of the cement-solidified Pisha sandstone. Microstructural analysis and non-destructive testing techniques were used to characterize the microstructure and pore changes of the cement-solidified Pisha sandstone. The experimental results show that the cement content and freeze-thaw cycles have significant effects on the properties and durability of the cement-solidified Pisha sandstone.

Effects of vegetation near-soil-surface factors on runoff and sediment reduction in typical grasslands on the Loess Plateau, China

Li Panpan et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the effects of near-soil-surface factors on runoff and sediment under natural rainfall events on grasslands in two typical watersheds on the Loess Plateau, China. The results show that plant canopy, litter, and roots can reduce runoff and sediment yield, while biological soil crusts (BSCs) increase runoff. The contribution of plant canopy to runoff reduction is the greatest. These findings provide a more complete insight into the effects of various vegetation-related factors in controlling soil erosion.

Effects of vegetation patterns on soil nitrogen and phosphorus losses on the slope-gully system of the Loess Plateau

Lulu Bai et al.

Summary: The slope-gully system on the Loess Plateau is greatly affected by soil erosion and loss of soil nutrients. Restoring vegetation can effectively reduce soil erosion and loss of nitrogen and phosphorus. This study found that different vegetation patterns significantly affected the loss of soil nitrogen and phosphorus, with the down-slope vegetation pattern being the most effective in reducing runoff and sediment yields, therefore reducing nitrogen and phosphorus loss. It is suggested to consider the lower part of the slope in vegetation restoration.

Multiple surface runoff and soil loss responses by sandstone morphologies to land-use and precipitation regimes changes in the Loess Plateau, China

Yang Yu et al.

Summary: This research conducted a long-term analysis of surface runoff and soil loss on Pisha sandstone hillslopes from the Loess Plateau, China under different land use and precipitation regimes. The results showed that precipitation regimes and land use types had significant impacts on surface runoff and soil loss, with heavy storms and bare land leading to the highest levels. Therefore, the selection of land use and vegetation should be considered carefully depending on precipitation regimes in order to control soil erosion effectively.

Changes in rainfall erosivity from combined effects of multiple factors in China's Loess Plateau

Jingpeng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatiotemporal variability of rainfall erosivity in the Loess Plateau and examined its relations to rainfall amount, temperature, and large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns. The results showed that rainfall erosivity had an insignificant increase overall but exhibited spatial variability. Rainfall amount was found to be the regional-scale controlling factor, and global atmospheric circulation patterns such as ENSO and ENSO-AO also influenced rainfall erosivity at different timescales.

Agriculture management and seasonal impact on soil properties, water, sediment and chemicals transport in a hazelnut orchard (Croatia)

Ivan Dugan et al.

Summary: Soil and water conservation practices play a key role in the sustainability of agroecosystems and the prevention of diffuse pollution. In this study, the impacts of different types of mulch on vegetation cover and soil properties were compared. The results showed that mulch increased vegetation cover and reduced runoff and chemical transport, thereby mitigating the impacts of agriculture on land degradation and diffuse pollution. These findings are of great importance in taking measures to reduce the effects of agriculture on land degradation and pollution.

Long-term changes in rainfed olive production, rainfall and farmer's income in Bailen (Jaen, Spain)

Jesus Rodrigo-Comino et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of climate on olive production and farmer income, finding that production is correlated with increased rainfall in August and December. Farmer income is highly dependent on the seasonal distribution of rainfall and the price of olives, with lower income during drought periods.

Recent advances in assessment of soil erosion vulnerability in a watershed

Shachi Pandey et al.

Summary: Soil erosion is a critical hazard affecting both environment and economy. Assessment of soil erosion risk is essential to plan conservation strategies, and worldwide models vary in methods used to evaluate vulnerability. There are challenges in assessing soil erosion vulnerability, but accurate data and methods are necessary to strategize soil conservation in fragile regions.

Improving and calibrating channel erosion simulation in the Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) model

Tian Guo et al.

Summary: The WEPP model has been widely used for assessing the impacts of management practices and climate change on runoff and soil loss, but the representation of channel erosion processes has not been significantly improved since its release. By updating the channel erodibility and critical shear stress values, the modified WEPP model showed improved performance in simulating watershed-scale event-based hydrology and soil erosion. Continued improvement in process-based models like WEPP is necessary to better evaluate the effectiveness of soil conservation practices on hydrology and erosion.

Does forest restoration influence soil infiltrability? A case study in the restored woodland of Sierra de avila (Central Spain)

Jorge Mongil-Manso et al.

Summary: The study found that soil infiltration rates were higher in 60-year-old pine reforested sites and in the sediment wedges of check dams, compared to degraded hillslopes and shrublands. Factors such as organic matter, humus and litter depth, as well as vegetation height and cover, influenced soil infiltration rates, while slope degree, presence of coarse elements, stoniness, clay content, bulk density, and electric conductivity hindered the rates. Pine reforestation and check dam construction helped degraded land recover its hydrological conditions, improving the hydrological cycle in the watershed.
