Spartina alterniflora invasion changed enrichment and coupling characteristics of multiple elements in coastal marsh sediment of the Yellow River Delta

Meijie Zheng et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the characteristics of 14 elements in sediments from coastal wetlands in the Yellow River Delta, where Spartina alterniflora (Sa) and native plants grow. The results showed that mineral elements such as iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) were highest in wetlands dominated by Phragmites australis (Pa), while biogenic elements such as carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) were most abundant in Sa wetlands. The elemental variation in Sa wetlands was controlled by phytogenous processes, while lithosphere or sedimentation governed elemental changes in Pa wetlands. Sa wetlands had a complex network with the greatest number of linkages among multiple elements, indicating that S. alterniflora invasion might enhance links among numerous elements. Fe, sulfur (S), Mn, and magnesium (Mg) were cores of element networks in wetlands covered by native plant species, while they shifted to Mg in Sa wetlands. The Fe-Mn connection was the most essential link of element networks in wetlands with native plant species, and it switched to the Mg-Mn link in Sa wetlands.

Heavy Metal Pollution in Aquaculture: Sources, Impacts and Mitigation Techniques

Ebuka Chizitere Emenike et al.

Summary: Aquaculture, a rapidly growing industry, has been increasingly studied for its treatment of heavy metal contamination. Techniques such as adsorption, bio-sorption, and phytoremediation have been used to mitigate the risks posed by heavy metals in aquaculture. Future research gaps include studying the effects of these metals on embryonic development and developmental stages of aquaculture organisms.

Nitrogen cycling in plant and soil subsystems is driven by changes in soil salinity following coastal embankment in typical coastal saltmarsh ecosystems of Eastern China

Hongyu Feng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of coastal embankments on plant and soil nitrogen cycling in coastal wetlands of China. Results showed that different saltmarshes responded differently to embankments, primarily driven by the decreased soil salinity affecting organic nitrogen inputs from plants.

Increased fluctuation of sulfur alleviates cadmium toxicity and exacerbates the expansion of Spartina alterniflora in coastal wetlands

Yueming Wu et al.

Summary: Evidence suggests that the invasion of Spartina alterniflora poses serious risks to coastal wetland stability. The addition of sulfur can promote the growth of S. alterniflora and enhance its tolerance to cadmium, potentially exacerbating its expansion in contaminated areas.

Coastal reclamation mediates heavy metal fractions and ecological risk in saltmarsh sediments of northern Jiangsu Province, China

Jingyan Chen et al.

Summary: Coastal reclamation has created additional land for economic development, but also caused pollution and posed threats to sustainable development. This study investigated the distribution patterns, geochemical speciation, and ecological risks of heavy metals in sediment samples from reclaimed and non-reclaimed tidal flats. The results showed higher metal pollution levels in reclaimed sediments, and the presence of Spartina alterniflora could accelerate the deposition and transfer of metal pollutants caused by reclamation.

Summary: The interactions and mechanisms between sulfur and heavy metals in coastal wetlands are attracting increasing attention in biogeochemical studies. However, there is currently no systematic review article summarizing the impact of sulfur on the bioavailability of heavy metals in these ecosystems. This review summarizes the studies published in the past four decades and highlights the major achievements in this field.

Comparison of wrack dynamics between mangrove forests with and without seawalls

Lincoln P. Critchley et al.

Summary: The study showed that the effects of seawalls on wrack composition and dynamics in mangrove forests may be weaker compared to unvegetated shorelines. This could be due to the autochthonous source of wrack in mangrove forests, the habitat structure minimizing hydrodynamic impacts, and differing reasons for constructing hard structures in different energy settings.

Distribution and partitioning of heavy metals in water and sediments of typical estuary (Modaomen, South China): The effect of water density stratification associated with salinity

Zhenzhen Jia et al.

Summary: The study found significant salinity variations in the Modaomen estuary, with higher heavy metal concentrations in bottom water likely due to elevated salinity and water stratification causing restricted mixing. Sediment heavy metal distribution was influenced by various factors, with internal release potentially contributing significantly to higher levels in bottom water. Saltwater intrusion facilitated the mobility and repartitioning of metals in the estuarine ecosystem.

Fluorescent dissolved organic matter facilitates the phytoavailability of copper in the coastal wetlands influenced by artificial topography

Hualong Hong et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatiotemporal dynamics of fDOM compositions and its Cu-binding capacity in response to AT. LMWOA extraction enhanced the intensity of one fDOM component, increased its conditional stability constant, and reduced its quenched proportion, suggesting LMWOA could extract Cu from fDOM complexation. The findings suggest that fDOM acts as an ecological regulator on vegetation growth under AT-induced matter accumulation.

On the Capability of the Epigeous Organs of Phragmites australis to Act as Metal Accumulators in Biomonitoring Studies

Daniela Baldantoni et al.

Summary: The study on the accumulation capability of common reed leaves reveals the higher effectiveness of leaves in indicating whole plant exposure compared to culms. Different metal accumulation patterns in leaves suggest pooling leaves from different whorls to improve sampling representativeness. Additionally, specific age-dependent variations of metal accumulation in leaves can be exploited for selecting sensitivity of biomonitoring.
