A review on comparative studies addressing exosome isolation methods from body fluids

Tania Soares Martins et al.

Summary: Exosomes are valuable sources of disease biomarkers and therapeutic tools. However, isolating extracellular vesicles with exosome-like characteristics from certain biofluids is still challenging due to the complexity and specific properties of each biofluid. This review summarizes and discusses comparative studies on different exosome isolation methods from human biofluids, including challenges, physical properties, and potential variation sources.

A signature of saliva-derived exosomal small RNAs as predicting biomarker for esophageal carcinoma: a multicenter prospective study

Kai Li et al.

Summary: A study focused on tRNA-derived small RNAs in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) has developed a non-invasive biomarker based on salivary exosomes. The study identified specific tsRNA and a previously undocumented small RNA in the salivary exosomes of ESCC patients, tissues, and cells. The bi-signature composed of these small RNAs was able to effectively discriminate ESCC patients from controls and provide prognostic information. Furthermore, the bi-signature can be used to select patients who would benefit from adjuvant therapy.

COVID-19 salivary Raman fingerprint: innovative approach for the detection of current and past SARS-CoV-2 infections

C. Carlomagno et al.

Summary: The study presents a Raman-based approach for analyzing saliva to differentiate signals from COVID-19 patients and others, demonstrating high accuracy, precision, sensitivity, and specificity in classifying patient signals. By developing a deep learning model, the discrimination of patient signals is translated to the patient level with an accuracy range of 89-92%. These findings suggest the potential of a Raman-based diagnostic tool using saliva as a minimally invasive and highly informative biofluid.

Characterization of the COPD Salivary Fingerprint through Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy: A Pilot Study

Cristiano Carlomagno et al.

Summary: The study applied Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy combined with Multivariate statistics to analyze saliva samples from 15 COPD patients and 15 healthy subjects, identifying specific differences in pathological saliva compared to healthy saliva. By utilizing linear discriminant analysis, a classification model was developed with high accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity for distinguishing between the two groups. These promising results suggest potential further applications of Raman spectroscopy in the clinical field of COPD.
