Effects of Endurance Training on the Coenzyme Q Redox State in Rat Heart, Liver, and Brain at the Tissue and Mitochondrial Levels: Implications for Reactive Oxygen Species Formation and Respiratory Chain Remodeling

Karolina Dominiak et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of aerobic exercise on coenzyme Q content and reactive oxygen species formation in the heart, liver and brain of rats. The results showed that aerobic exercise increased mitochondrial biogenesis and the level of reduced coenzyme Q in the heart and brain, acting as an antioxidant. Furthermore, aerobic exercise increased the antioxidant pool in the mitochondria of the heart and liver, but not in the brain. These findings suggest that aerobic exercise plays an important role in energy metabolism, redox homeostasis and oxidative stress levels.

No effect of five days of bed rest or short-term resistance exercise prehabilitation on markers of skeletal muscle mitochondrial content and dynamics in older adults

Ryan N. Marshall et al.

Summary: In healthy older adults, a 5-day period of bed rest did not result in significant perturbation in muscle mitochondrial protein signaling, and short-term resistance exercise prehabilitation did not affect this situation. Therefore, muscle atrophy induced by disuse may precede alterations in mitochondrial content.

Effect of low-intensity motor balance and coordination exercise on cognitive functions, hippocampal Aβ deposition, neuronal loss, neuroinflammation, and oxidative stress in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease

Kazuki Nakanishi et al.

Summary: This study found that low-intensity motor balance and coordination exercise prevented age-related cognitive decline in the early stage of Alzheimer's disease progression. This type of exercise may work by suppressing hippocampal A beta deposition, neuronal loss, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation, including reduced M1 and A1 phenotypes microglia and astrocytes.
